What is a senior technical project manager?

Senior Technical Project Managers are experienced professionals responsible for overseeing complex technical projects from initiation to completion. They coordinate cross-functional teams, manage project timelines and budgets, and ensure that technical solutions meet organizational goals. They also communicate with stakeholders, identify risks, and implement strategies to resolve issues. Their deep technical knowledge enables them to bridge the gap between technical teams and business objectives, ensuring successful project delivery.

How does a senior technical project manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project's lifecycle?

A Senior Technical Project Manager works closely with software engineers, designers, QA testers, product managers, and stakeholders to ensure project goals are met. They facilitate regular meetings, clarify requirements, remove obstacles, and align team efforts with organizational objectives. Effective communication and coordination are crucial, as the role often involves balancing technical constraints with business priorities while keeping all parties informed and engaged throughout the project lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior technical project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Technical Project Manager, you need expertise in project management methodologies, technical acumen, and a track record of leading complex projects, often supported by a bachelor’s degree and certifications like PMP or Agile credentials. Familiarity with project management tools such as Jira, MS Project, and collaboration platforms is essential for planning, tracking, and communication. Technical Project Manager - Program Management

Job Title: Technical Project Manager - Program Support

Location: DFW, TX preferred

Reports to: Director or Program Management

Employment Type: Full time, onsite

Who We Are:

MPI Energy is a global leader in battery technologies, specifically valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) and lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries. Headquartered in Grand Prairie, Texas, we provide innovative backup power and energy-storage solutions across critical markets, including:

  • Critical Power: Supporting data centers and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) applications.
  • Reserve Power: Serving telecom and CATV base stations, as well as outside-plant sites.
  • Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS): Focusing on utility-scale and commercial & industrial solutions.

At MPI Energy, we are committed to delivering high-quality, turn-key integrated systems and modular components tailored to meet our customers' diverse needs. Our team values collaboration, innovation, and excellence, fostering a supportive environment that empowers every employee to contribute to a sustainable energy future.

Job Summary:

We're building out the Program Management team that keeps MPI Energy's mission-critical power and energy storage platforms moving from concept to commissioning. This role is the operational backbone behind that effort. You'll support active programs from the back end: keeping schedules current, tracking action items, coordinating across teams, and making sure nothing falls through the cracks as our BESS and power solutions move through development and delivery.

What matters is that you're organized, systems-minded, and comfortable running the mechanics of complex programs. You'll learn the domain as you go, with direct support from an experienced Program Management leader.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain program schedules, trackers, and dashboards so program leads always have an accurate picture of status, risks, and upcoming milestones
  • Coordinate cross-functional touchpoints across Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Quality, and Field/Service, keeping action items owned, dated, and closed out
  • Prepare meeting agendas, capture decisions and follow-ups, and drive accountability on the resulting tasks
  • Track program documentation through phase gates (EVT/DVT/PVT/SOP), keeping records organized and audit-ready
  • Flag schedule slips, resourcing gaps, and long-lead items early so program leads can act before they become problems
  • Build and maintain reporting that turns scattered program data into clear, executive-ready summaries
  • Manage the operating cadence of the PMO: standing meetings, status rollups, and recurring deliverables

Qualifications:

Required:

  • 3+ years in project coordination, program support, PMO operations, or a comparable back-end delivery role
  • Strong organizational instincts and genuine attention to detail; you notice when something is missing
  • Fluency with project and collaboration tools (scheduling software, trackers, dashboards, Microsoft 365)
  • Clear written communication; you can turn ambiguity into a tidy status update
  • Ability to juggle multiple programs at once without losing the thread
  • Comfortable working across technical teams even without a technical background

Preferred:

  • PMP, CAPM
  • Experience in manufacturing, hardware, or regulated environments
  • Familiarity with phase-gate or stage-gate product development
  • Primarily office- or remote-based, supporting programs from the back end
  • Standard business hours, with occasional flexibility around program milestones, gate reviews, or delivery deadlines
  • Minimal travel; occasional trips for team planning or program kickoffs as needed
  • Extended periods working at a computer across scheduling, tracking, and collaboration tools

Key Traits for Success:

  • Self-starter who can manage multiple programs independently without close oversight
  • Strong written and verbal communication; comfortable coordinating across technical teams
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy, follow-through, and quality
  • Adaptable and organized in a fast-paced, multi-program environment
  • 401(k)
  • Health insurance
  • Paid time off
  • Vision insurance

Equal Employment Opportunity Statement:

MPI Energy is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status. All employment decisions are made based on qualifications, merit, and business needs. We encourage individuals from all backgrounds to apply and join our team.
