Senior Sensor Fusion Engineer information

What does a senior sensor fusion engineer do?

A Senior Sensor Fusion Engineer designs and implements algorithms that integrate data from multiple sensors, such as cameras, radars, and lidars, to create a comprehensive understanding of the environment. This role is essential in fields like autonomous vehicles, robotics, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). Senior engineers not only develop and optimize fusion algorithms, but also analyze sensor data, ensure system reliability, and mentor junior team members. They often collaborate with hardware and software teams to ensure seamless integration and performance. Their expertise helps improve the accuracy, safety, and efficiency of complex sensor-based systems.

How does a senior sensor fusion engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during the development of perception systems?

As a Senior Sensor Fusion Engineer, you will work closely with software engineers, hardware designers, data scientists, and product managers to integrate data from multiple sensors such as cameras, LiDAR, and RADAR. Collaboration often involves defining sensor requirements, troubleshooting integration issues, and optimizing algorithms for real-time performance. Regular cross-team meetings and code reviews are common, ensuring alignment on system architecture and performance targets. Effective communication and the ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-specialists are key to success in this collaborative environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior sensor fusion engineer, and why are they important?

A Senior Sensor Fusion Engineer requires advanced knowledge of sensor technologies, signal processing, and algorithms, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field. Proficiency with programming languages such as C++, Python, and MATLAB, as well as experience with tools like ROS and sensor simulation platforms, is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are crucial for developing reliable sensor fusion systems that enable accurate perception and decision-making in complex environments such as autonomous vehicles or robotics.

What is the difference between Senior Sensor Fusion Engineer vs Sensor Systems Engineer?

AspectSenior Sensor Fusion EngineerSensor Systems Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields; experience with sensor data processingBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related fields; knowledge of sensor integration
Work EnvironmentResearch and development teams, automotive, aerospace, robotics industriesDesign and testing of sensor systems, often in automotive, industrial, or consumer electronics sectors
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in autonomous vehicles, robotics, aerospace for sensor data fusionUsed in product development, sensor integration, and system testing in similar industries

The main difference is that a Senior Sensor Fusion Engineer focuses on integrating multiple sensor data sources to create cohesive perception systems, often requiring advanced algorithms and data processing skills. In contrast, a Sensor Systems Engineer typically handles the design, implementation, and testing of sensor hardware and systems. Both roles are vital in industries like automotive and aerospace but differ in their core responsibilities and expertise areas.

Job description

Position Overview
We are seeking a Software and Autonomy Engineering Lead to own technical direction for our full autonomy software stack from embedded firmware through perception and into higher autonomous targeting behaviors. This role leads the engineering team building computer vision, sensor fusion, targeting, and control systems that operate on constrained edge hardware in dynamic, contested environments.
You will set architecture and coding standards across firmware and software, mentor and grow the engineering team, and personally develop perception and autonomy systems from prototyping through field deployment.
Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
  • Set technical direction and architecture standards spanning firmware and autonomy software
  • Lead, mentor, and help grow a small team of firmware and software engineers
  • Own build vs. buy and make vs. partner decisions for perception and autonomy components
  • Partner with hardware and program management on system-level tradeoffs

Perception & Autonomy
  • Develop and deploy real-time object detection, classification, and tracking systems for small, fast-moving aerial and ground targets
  • Optimize models for edge deployment in constrained environments
  • Build multi-sensor perception pipelines that enable sensor fusion
  • Build robustness for real-world conditions
  • Integrate perception outputs into downstream tracking and effector control systems
Firmware & Systems Integration
  • Oversee firmware architecture for sensor drivers, real-time OS scheduling, and hardware controls
  • Ensure clean interfaces between firmware, perception, and targeting layers
  • Support field testing, integration, and troubleshooting across the full stack

Required Skills and Experience
  • Experience leading or mentoring a software/firmware engineering team
  • Experience with modern computer vision models and training/fine-tuning/deployment
  • Proven track record of edge model optimization
  • Experience with lead-angle calculation for computing aimpoint solutions from tracked target kinematics
  • Experience building human-in-the-loop control interfaces or state machines that facilitate automated tracking and operator authorization
  • Embedded/firmware experience: real-time OS, sensor drivers, and hardware management
  • Experience with real-time video pipelines and multi-sensor fusion
  • Experience with Hailo or similar edge AI accelerators
  • Python, C++ &/OR Rust skills

Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Experience in kill chain methodologies, edge perception and classification for specific target sets, and an understanding of the trade-offs for different sensing modalities and wavelengths
  • Experience with hardware control loop algorithms for tracking and targeting
  • Experience with multi-object tracking and target fusion and arbitration
  • Prior experience in defense, counter-UAS, or small-UAS autonomy systems
  • Experience developing and/or working in .cu files
