Job description

Senior Project Risk Manager

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory | Berkeley, CA

90/hour + Benefits | 1-Year Contract (Hybrid)

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is seeking an accomplished Senior Project Risk Manager to lead integrated risk management for the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U) Project.

This is a high-visibility opportunity to work directly with senior project leadership, engineering, project controls, DOE, and technical teams on a complex, nationally significant scientific infrastructure program.

You will provide the insight and analysis leadership needs to make informed, timely, and confident project decisions.

What You'll Do
  • Lead the ALS-U enterprise project risk-management program and maintain the project risk register.
  • Facilitate risk workshops, Risk Management Board meetings, deep dives, and senior-level risk reviews.
  • Identify, assess, quantify, monitor, and elevate technical, cost, schedule, procurement, installation, commissioning, staffing, and external risks.
  • Develop and maintain quantitative cost and schedule risk models.
  • Perform Monte Carlo simulations, sensitivity analysis, scenario analysis, uncertainty analysis, and contingency assessments.
  • Integrate risk with Primavera P6, cost estimates, control accounts, critical-path activities, contingency, and project forecasts.
  • Challenge assumptions, evaluate mitigation effectiveness, identify emerging risks, and ensure accountability for risk-response actions.
  • Prepare executive-level risk reports, briefings, and decision-support materials for project leadership, Laboratory management, DOE, and external review committees.
  • Support rebaselines, recovery plans, funding scenarios, independent cost reviews, DOE reviews, and major project decisions.
  • Continuously improve risk processes, tools, reporting, training, and governance.
What You Bring
  • 8+ years of progressively responsible experience in project risk management, project controls, cost/schedule management, or complex capital projects.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Project Management, Construction Management, Business, Economics, Statistics, or related field—or equivalent experience.
  • Proven experience managing risk for large, technically complex capital, infrastructure, scientific, aerospace, defense, or industrial projects.
  • Strong experience with risk registers, risk workshops, mitigation planning, and executive-level risk reporting.
  • Advanced quantitative risk-analysis experience, including Monte Carlo simulation, cost/schedule uncertainty, sensitivity analysis, and contingency confidence levels.
  • Experience integrating risk with Integrated Master Schedules, cost estimates, EAC, change control, and project performance reporting.
  • Excellent executive communication, facilitation, analytical, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to challenge assumptions, communicate difficult information, and escal... material risks while maintaining strong working relationships.
Preferred
  • DOE Order 413.3B capital-project experience.
  • Knowledge of DOE Guide 413.3-7A.
  • Experience with Safran Risk / Safran Risk Manager.
  • Proficiency with Primavera P6.
  • EVMS experience.
  • Experience with project rebaselines, recovery plans, independent cost estimates, external reviews, or corrective-action programs.
  • Experience with particle accelerators, scientific facilities, major infrastructure, aerospace, defense, or highly integrated technical programs.
  • PMI-RMP, PMP, AACE, or equivalent certification.
  • Advanced degree in a relevant discipline.
Why This Role?

This isn't simply a risk-management position - it is an opportunity to shape how a major scientific project understands uncertainty, protects contingency, manages critical-path exposure, and makes high-stakes decisions.

If you're a senior risk professional who can move seamlessly between executive strategy, quantitative analysis, project controls, and technical teams, we want to hear from you.
