Is risk engineer a good career?

A risk engineer is a professional responsible for identifying, analyzing, and mitigating risks in various industries such as insurance, manufacturing, and energy. The role often requires strong analytical skills, knowledge of safety standards, and certifications like Certified Risk Manager (CRM). It can offer stable employment and opportunities for advancement, especially for those with technical expertise and experience in risk assessment tools.

What does a Senior Risk Engineer do?

A Senior Risk Engineer is responsible for identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks in engineering projects or operations, often within sectors like insurance, energy, or manufacturing. They analyze potential hazards, develop risk management strategies, and ensure compliance with regulations and industry standards. These professionals also provide recommendations to improve safety, reduce losses, and support business decision-making. Senior Risk Engineers often mentor junior staff and work closely with project managers, safety teams, and other stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Risk Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Risk Engineer, you need deep expertise in risk assessment, engineering principles, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field and several years of industry experience. Familiarity with risk analysis tools (such as HAZOP, FMEA), industry standards, and certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) are often required. Strong analytical thinking, communication, and leadership skills help you effectively identify risks and guide teams in implementing mitigation strategies. These competencies are critical for ensuring operational safety, regulatory adherence, and minimizing potential losses in complex engineering environments.

Job description

Title: Senior Electrical Engineer

Shift: Condensed Schedule | 9 hours per day Monday through Thursday, 4 hours on Friday

Salary: $90,000 - $110,000 per year, plus a performance-based bonus; exact compensation is dependent on experience

Senior Electrical Engineer Role:

Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer with 5+ years of hands-on experience to design, develop, and support embedded electronic systems from concept through production. This role exists to drive key product development activities—including circuit design, PCB layout, microcontroller integration, and firmware—while directly supporting manufacturing with test rig development, test procedures, and DFM reviews.

Senior Electrical Engineer Responsibilities:

  • Perform full-cycle circuit design, including component selection, schematic capture, and PCB board layout

  • Develop and maintain firmware for embedded microcontrollers, including low-level drivers, communication protocols, and real-time performance optimization

  • Oversee and improve electronic circuit test procedures within the manufacturing operation

  • Design and build custom test fixtures and wiring harnesses for efficient production evaluation of new and existing designs

  • Contribute to acoustic systems design, USB integration, and Bluetooth wireless development

  • Ensure robust RFI/EMI mitigation, signal integrity, and power management across all designs

  • Support Design for Manufacturability (DFM), including optimizing PCB layouts for pick-and-place production

  • Collaborate with cross-functional mechanical, software, manufacturing, and quality teams to successfully integrate hardware, firmware, and mechanical systems

  • Participate in design reviews, risk analysis, and verification/validation activities to meet stringent military and medical standards

Senior Electrical Engineer Reporting Relationships:

The Senior Electrical Engineer reports directly to the Engineering Manager. This position serves as a senior-level technical contributor and works closely with cross-functional teams across the production floor and engineering lab.

About You:

  • Possess a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience)

  • Hold a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in electrical and embedded systems design, ideally within military, aerospace, defense, or medical device industries

  • Demonstrate proven expertise in circuit schematic design and PCB layout, with Altium Designer or equivalent software strongly preferred

  • Maintain hands-on experience developing, debugging, and programming firmware for real-time embedded microcontroller applications

  • Exhibit strong functional expertise in RFI/EMI mitigation techniques, digital circuitry, signal integrity, Bluetooth, and USB integration

  • Demonstrate knowledge of high-reliability/safety-critical design practices and regulatory compliance standards such as MIL-STD, IPC, ISO 9001, ISO 13485, IEC 60601, or FDA design controls

  • Maintain familiarity with laboratory and environmental testing tools, including automated testing, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and spectrum analyzers

  • Display a solid understanding of acoustic signal processing or audio system integration

  • Exhibit excellent written and verbal communication skills alongside strong analytical troubleshooting abilities in both lab and production environments

Next Steps:

If you are a driven, technical leader who is a natural problem solver, we would like to hear from you. Please reach out to our recruiting agency today to discuss taking the next step in your engineering career with our client.
