What is a senior programmer?

Senior Programmers are experienced software developers who take on advanced coding tasks and often provide technical leadership within their teams. They are responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining complex software systems, as well as mentoring junior developers. Senior Programmers typically have strong problem-solving skills, deep knowledge of programming languages, and experience with software architecture. They may also be involved in code reviews, setting best practices, and collaborating with other departments to deliver high-quality software solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior programmer?

To thrive as a Senior Programmer, you need advanced proficiency in programming languages, solid software development experience, and often a relevant degree or equivalent expertise. Familiarity with frameworks, version control systems like Git, and agile development tools is typically required, and certifications in cloud platforms or specific technologies can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills enable effective collaboration and mentorship within development teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering robust, scalable solutions and driving technical excellence in complex projects.

How do senior programmers typically mentor junior team members, and what impact does this have on team productivity?

Senior Programmers often play a key mentorship role by guiding junior developers through code reviews, pair programming, and sharing best practices. They provide technical leadership and help troubleshoot complex issues, ensuring code quality and knowledge transfer across the team. This mentorship not only fosters professional growth for junior members but also contributes to stronger team cohesion and faster problem-solving, ultimately boosting overall productivity and project success.

What is the difference between Senior Programmer vs Software Developer?

AspectSenior ProgrammerSoftware Developer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field; extensive coding experienceBachelor's degree often preferred; coding skills essential
Work EnvironmentDevelopment teams, project-based work, often in tech or software companiesSimilar environments; involved in designing, coding, testing software
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across tech, finance, healthcare, and other industries requiring software solutionsCommonly used in software firms, startups, and corporate IT departments

While both roles involve coding and software development, a Senior Programmer typically has more experience, takes on complex tasks, and may mentor junior staff. A Software Developer focuses on designing and building software applications, often with less emphasis on leadership or advanced technical oversight.

What do senior programmers do?

Senior programmers design, develop, and maintain software applications, often leading projects and mentoring junior team members. They analyze user requirements, write efficient code, troubleshoot issues, and ensure software quality using programming languages and development tools. Their role also involves reviewing code, optimizing performance, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver technical solutions.

W2 Candidates Only!

Responsibilities:
The Senior Control‑M Engineer develops conceptual, logical, and physical IT engineering designs that support infrastructure requirements across business and technical application projects. This role ensures availability, resiliency, and secure orchestration of mission‑critical workloads. The engineer will contribute to modernization initiatives including automation‑first orchestration, jobs‑as‑code, API-driven integration, and multi‑environment scheduling capabilities.

This is a senior-level role requiring a seasoned professional with deep engineering expertise, comprehensive platform knowledge, and strong operational judgment.

Key Responsibilities:

Engineering & Platform Management
  • Install, configure, upgrade, and patch Control‑M Servers and Agents across multi‑site environments (legacy on‑prem, CoLo production, CoLo non‑production).
  • Design, implement, and maintain job scheduling workflows, workload orchestration, and user/security configuration.
  • Conduct operational health checks, monitor system performance, and ensure compliance with enterprise standards and audit/security requirements.
  • Assess testing requirements, prepare testing strategies, and develop implementation and transition plans.
  • Analyze and revise system logic, documentation, and technical standards as needed.

Operational Support & Troubleshooting
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex hardware, software, OS, and networking issues impacting scheduling infrastructure.
  • Perform change and problem management using standard tools and National IT policies.
  • Complete customer service requests including new agent deployments and environment setup.
  • Document issues, solutions, and workarounds in a maintained internal knowledge base.
  • Provide on‑call coverage as required to support 247 scheduling operations.

Modernization & Strategic Initiatives
  • Support Automation API, jobs‑as‑code adoption, workflow modernization, vendor enhancements, and enterprise integration.
  • Provide engineering support for multi‑environment orchestration tied to FRFS modernization.
  • Participate in modernization roadmap work including resiliency engineering, cloud‑aligned scheduling, and advanced automation capabilities.

Leadership & Collaboration
  • Lead highly technical and complex engineering projects using FRIT/System resources.
  • Train technical staff on Control‑M tools, platform functionality, and engineering standards.
  • Report solution gaps, platform issues, and resiliency risks to management.
  • Partner with business lines, infrastructure teams, security, and operations for cross-functional alignment.
  • Participate in team meetings, issue review, prioritization, and continuous improvement activities.

Risk Management
  • Responsible for understanding and applying risk management discipline in decision-making, ensuring compliance with internal standards, audit guidelines, and the Information Security Manual.

Why This Role Matters
  • Control‑M is foundational to secure, timely, and resilient processing of high‑value payment systems. As operating hours expand and platform complexity grows, this senior engineering role safeguards reliability, compliance, and modernization across critical national financial services.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience.
  • 6-9+ years of relevant work experience in IT engineering, infrastructure operations, or workload automation.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Control‑M administration: Server & Agent installation/configuration, Job scheduling & workflow design, User access/security, Patch management & upgrades
  • Experience with Control‑M multi-environment orchestration (on‑prem + CoLo).
  • Strong hands‑on experience with Linux/Unix and Windows Server administration.
  • Shell scripting (Bash, PowerShell) and log analysis skills.
  • SQL skills and basic database troubleshooting (PostgreSQL or Oracle).
  • Networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, ports, firewall configuration).
  • Experience with Control‑M Configuration Manager and scheduling functions/user management.
  • Familiarity with ITSM tools (ServiceNow, Jira) and monitoring tools (Splunk, Dynatrace).
  • Strong documentation, root cause analysis, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, communication, and attention‑to‑detail skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Control‑M Automation API, Workload Archiving, Application Integrator experience.
  • Advanced scripting (Python), CI/CD pipeline integration (Git-based), or infrastructure-as-code (Ansible, Terraform).
  • Cloud platform exposure (AWS, Azure, GCP) or Control‑M cloud deployments.
  • Advanced SQL, database tuning, and performance optimization.
  • Security integration experience (SIEM tools, SSL, Venafi).
  • Experience with Agile, SAFe, or scaled enterprise delivery.
  • ITIL Foundation or BMC Control‑M certification.

Working Conditions:
  • Requires use of standard office equipment (computer, phone, copier).
