A Day in the Life of a Senior Engineer

If you are on the civil design track, you'll lead and mentor an interdisciplinary team to deliver multimodal transportation infrastructure in a wide range of contexts from roadway reconstructions and streetscapes in highly urban settings to signature trail projects in suburban and rural areas that highlight and enhance the natural environment. You use programs such as AutoCAD and/or MicroStation in order to fulfill production work on your projects. You will manage projects; guide your team and clients through concept development, design review, bid package development, permitting, and construction management. You will help develop construction documents; and work with your team to ensure that our projects are consistently of the highest quality.


If you're on the transportation design track, you'll help lead the team in creation of signing and pavement marking plans, maintenance of traffic, and traffic signal plans for roadway projects and streetscapes in urban settings. You will use programs such as Synchro, Highway Capacity Software, MicroStation, and AutoCAD to fulfill production work on your projects. You'll use state of the art tools and practices to help create sustainable multimodal transportation networks. You'll also have the opportunity to work on a wide spectrum of projects that inform your design work, including road diet analyses, multimodal traffic studies for new development, roundabout studies, trail/roadway intersection studies and designs, and parking studies and design guidance.


Work Schedule for a Senior Engineer

This full-time position typically works a flexible schedule of 40 hours a week. We also provide employees with the flexibility and necessary equipment to work from home up to 2 days per week.Toole Design's Minneapolis office is conveniently located downtown at 212 3rd Avenue N, near to the Mississippi River and Cedar Lake bike trail systems and walking distance from Metro Blue, Green, Orange, and C line Stations. Requirements

Qualifications of a Senior Engineer:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in civil engineering
  • Professional Engineering license (PE/PTOE) in Minnesota (or ability to obtain)
  • 10+ years of experience
  • 3+ years of experience in project or design management
  • A broad knowledge base in civil engineering
  • Understanding of basic geometric design principles of transportation facilities and industry transportation facility design standards
  • Proficiency in one or more of the following: MicroStation (including OpenRoads), AutoCAD (including Civil 3D)
  • Experience coordinating utility, right-of-way, street lighting, traffic signals, and landscape and hardscape layout
  • Experience developing construction documents and cost estimates
