Position Overview

As the Senior Packaging Developer, you will lead packaging programs across multiple brands and sites. You will serve as a recognized internal Subject Matter Expert (SME) and mentor, driving innovation through advanced R&D, analytical tools, and sustainability practices.

This role blends strategic influence with hands-on technical leadership - from ideation and design to commercialization - ensuring that McCormick's packaging solutions deliver on performance, sustainability, and consumer delight.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead Innovation: Drive the development of new packaging technologies through advanced research and development, applying analytical and sustainability tools to deliver breakthrough solutions.
  • Strategic Project Leadership: Lead packaging projects aligned with business priorities, delivering measurable growth, cost savings, quality improvements, and sustainability advancements.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with R&D, Supply Chain, Marketing, and Operations to align packaging initiatives with brand stewardship, innovation pipelines, and operational capabilities.
  • Technical Expertise: Act as an internal SME within the packaging function, providing expert guidance across teams. Apply knowledge of material science, manufacturing processes, tolerances, filling systems, palletization and distribution. Utilize analytical tools and test methodologies to validate performance and optimize designs.
  • Mentorship & Capability Building: Mentor colleagues and junior developers, fostering technical excellence and knowledge sharing across the organization.
  • Continuous Improvement: Proactively identify opportunities to improve processes, tools, and methodologies in areas of expertise. Champion innovation projects and apply advanced analytical and sustainability approaches.
  • Standards & Best Practices: Develop, document, and present best practices, ensuring consistency and excellence in packaging development across global teams.
  • Leadership in Execution: Manage multiple projects concurrently, ensuring milestones, budgets, and deliverables are met while maintaining the highest technical standards.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Package Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • Experience: 10+ years of experience in packaging development and project management within the food and beverage industry with a track record of delivering innovation in consumer products
  • Technical Expertise: Strong background in packaging materials, analytical methods, and sustainability tools
  • Leadership: Proven ability to influence cross-functional teams and manage multiple complex projects simultaneously
  • Communication: Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and influencing skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for diverse audiences
  • Systems Proficiency: Skilled in SAP, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and C.A.P.E. palletization software
  • Location: Based in proximity to Hunt Valley, MD; South Bend, IN; or Springfield, MO.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in consumer learning tools, ideation processes, and technology analysis
  • Demonstrated expertise in sustainable packaging design and knowledge of alternative distribution channels (e.g., club stores, e-commerce)

Base Salary: $87,910 to $153,870

Base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, skills, education, experience for this role, and/or internal equity of our current employees as part of any final offer. This position is also eligible to participate in McCormick's Incentive Bonus (MIB) Plan. In addition to a competitive compensation package, permanent employees of McCormick are eligible for our extensive Total Rewards programs that include:
