Job description

PURPOSE

This role is to provide mechanical engineering, design, and documentation support within the organization. This position requires creativity, innovation, mechanical systems design capability, product evaluation, and research. A successful candidate will be fully capable of leading multiple large-scale projects and mentoring throughout the organization.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Collaborate with internal and external customers to establish requirements that meet desired outputs while suggesting alternatives.
  • Conduct technical product and process evaluations to identify potential modes of failure, provide recommended countermeasures, alternative evaluation criteria and report results back to internal and external customers.
  • Communicate technical knowledge, specification, design, and business direction to an extended audience of internal and external customers.
  • Read, interpret, and create pneumatic schematics.
  • Troubleshoot pneumatic circuits.
  • Define, create, and input data utilizing corporate management system software that include CAD models, part documentation, bills of material, assembly documentation, cost analysis, and procedure documentation.
  • Perform independent research on a variety of topics, provide summarized data, and present observations.
  • Complete assigned tasks while implementing departmental processes.
  • Hands on technical support for an extended audience (technical and non-technical) of internal and external customers.
  • Lead and/or participate on teams to accomplish tasks, processes, and corporate directives.
  • Travel mainly for the purpose of projects, customer support, or trade shows. (Less than 10%)
  • All other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Capacity to work indoors in an office, laboratory, and/or manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to work in a stationary position for prolonged periods of time.
  • Capability to lift objects or equipment weighing up to 51 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Physical aptitude to use basic hand tools in a laboratory and/or manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to travel and/or attend meetings domestic and internationally outside of normal business hours.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in a mechanical or technical Engineering discipline, or the equivalent in appropriate education and experience as determined by management utilizing internal SMC career development criteria.
  • Fluent understanding of the product development process.
  • Fluent understanding to apply project management principles, methodologies, and documentation.
  • Fluent understanding of CAD software as applied to product development process.
  • Fluent understanding of CAE tools and results as applied to the product development process.
  • Expert understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Fluent understanding of tolerance as it relates to design intent.
  • Fluent in conducting Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA) and providing technical assistance in problem resolution.
  • Expert understanding of common assembly processes.
  • Fluent understanding of common material conversion processes in manufacturing.
  • Fluent understanding of material and component options by application.
  • Fluent understanding of schematics.
  • Fluent in conducting research using corporate resources.
  • Expert at efficient use of time to effectively plan and execute multiple duties.
  • Expert to utilize basic inspection equipment in a laboratory environment. (Calipers, micrometers, flow meter, voltmeter, etc.)
  • Fluent to utilize advanced inspection equipment in a laboratory environment. (microscopes, CMM, Contour/Roundness Measuring Instruments, etc.)
  • Fluent ability to communicate utilizing corporate office software.ย 
  • Expert ability to take verbal and/or written direction on tasks, training, or departmental / company policies.
  • Expert ability to communicate, in English, with internal and external customers tactfully and professionally.
  • 8+ years (preferred) relevant work experience.
