What are Senior Infrastructure Managers?

Senior Infrastructure Managers are experienced professionals responsible for overseeing an organization's IT infrastructure, including hardware, software, networks, and data centers. They lead teams to ensure systems are secure, reliable, and scalable, and they often manage budgets, projects, and vendor relationships. Their role involves strategic planning, implementing new technologies, and maintaining high availability of IT services to support business operations. Senior Infrastructure Managers typically collaborate with other IT leaders and align infrastructure initiatives with organizational goals.

What is the difference between Senior Infrastructure Manager vs Network Engineer?

AspectSenior Infrastructure ManagerNetwork Engineer

Work EnvironmentOversees entire infrastructure, including servers, storage, and cloud systems; manages teams and projectsFocuses on designing, implementing, and maintaining network systems and hardware
Industry UsageCommon in large enterprises, IT departments, and cloud service providersUsed across various industries for network setup, troubleshooting, and optimization

The Senior Infrastructure Manager oversees the entire IT infrastructure, including networks, servers, and cloud systems, often managing teams and strategic projects. In contrast, a Network Engineer specializes in designing, implementing, and maintaining network hardware and configurations. While both roles require networking certifications and technical expertise, the manager role has broader responsibilities and leadership duties.

What are some common challenges faced by Senior Infrastructure Managers when overseeing large-scale IT projects?

Senior Infrastructure Managers often encounter challenges such as aligning infrastructure upgrades with evolving business needs, managing cross-functional teams with diverse skill sets, and ensuring minimal downtime during system migrations or updates. Balancing budget constraints while maintaining high performance and security standards is another frequent hurdle. Effective communication and collaboration with stakeholders across departments are essential to address these challenges and ensure the smooth delivery of complex IT projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Infrastructure Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Infrastructure Manager, you need expertise in IT infrastructure management, network architecture, and systems administration, often supported by a bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), virtualization technologies, ITIL frameworks, and relevant certifications like PMP or Cisco are typically required. Strong leadership, strategic thinking, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These skills are crucial for ensuring reliable, scalable, and secure infrastructure that supports organizational goals.

Job description

The Senior Infrastructure Engineer delivers network and systems solutions for higher education institutions. This role emphasizes in-depth, hands-on work in network and system infrastructure development, deployment, and support, with a strategic focus on performance, security, and scalability across managed services. The Senior Infrastructure Engineer will be critical in configuring and optimizing network operations, implementing advanced security measures, and supporting multi-tenant environments in both on-premise and cloud infrastructures.

The Senior Infrastructure Engineer works closely with the Executive Director to implement institutional technology strategies and operational priorities while ensuring the stability, security, reliability, and performance of the institution’s technology infrastructure.

This role serves as the operational bridge between onsite technical staff, CampusWorks Centers of Excellence (CoEs), institutional stakeholders, project teams, and external vendors to ensure consistent, high-quality technology operations and service delivery.

The Senior Infrastructure Engineer is also responsible for ensuring the operational security, integrity, and resiliency of the institution’s infrastructure and data center environment. This includes oversight and coordination of infrastructure-related cybersecurity practices such as vulnerability remediation, patch management, identity and access controls, infrastructure hardening, backup integrity, disaster recovery readiness, monitoring, and adherence to established security standards and operational policies.

The Senior Infrastructure Engineer partners closely with institutional leadership, and CampusWorks applicable Centers of Excellence (CoEs) to support compliance initiatives, risk reduction efforts, incident response coordination, and the implementation of security best practices across the infrastructure environment.

Essential Job Duties:
  • Architect, configure, and deploy network equipment such as switches, routers, firewalls, and wireless controllers (Cisco, Meraki, Palo Alto).
  • Implement network segmentation and VLANs, ensuring efficient traffic flow, security, and scalability tailored to client-specific needs.
  • Establish high-performance routing and switching, focusing on maintaining secure connections for remote access solutions like VPNs and SD-WAN technologies.
  • Build and maintain virtualized environments using VMware, Hyper-V, and cloud-based solutions (Azure, AWS). Ensure virtual server performance aligns with operational and client requirements.
  • Conduct regular system updates, patching, and performance tuning of Windows and Linux servers to ensure reliability, compliance, and security across all managed services.
  • Utilize monitoring tools (e.g., Connectwise, SolarWinds, Nagios, Whatsup Gold, Zabbix) to oversee network health, optimize bandwidth usage, and detect anomalies. Set up proactive alerts and automated incident response protocols.
  • Leverage data analytics to evaluate performance metrics, identify areas of improvement, and implement solutions that enhance system uptime and user experience.
  • Implement and manage firewall policies, intrusion prevention systems (IPS), and web filtering to safeguard network integrity and comply with regulatory standards such as FERPA, GLBA, and SOC II.
  • Perform vulnerability scans, security audits, and incident response forensics, ensuring quick identification, containment, and remediation of threats.
  • Design and implement storage solutions and disaster recovery plans, including SAN/NAS setup, backup routines, and regular testing of data recovery processes.
  • Automate backup schedules, verifying data integrity, and configuring failover strategies to meet business continuity objectives.
  • Develop and maintain detailed documentation for all network and system configurations, standard operating procedures, and security practices.

Leadership & Staff Development

  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and operational direction to assigned technical staff and service delivery resources.
  • Foster a collaborative and customer-focused team environment.
  • Support staffing coordination, resource planning, and workload prioritization activities.
  • Assist with employee performance management, coaching, and professional development efforts.
  • Encourage continuous improvement, operational accountability, and knowledge sharing.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Lead training sessions for junior engineers and support staff, providing technical knowledge and hands-on guidance to ensure effective knowledge sharing and continuity.
  • Occasional travel to clients sites, as needed.
  • Other duties, as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:

  • In-depth knowledge of network hardware and software, with hands-on experience in configuration and management.
  • Advanced expertise in firewall configurations, including setup, monitoring, and optimization for security and performance.
  • Proficiency with cloud platforms, specifically Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS), including deployment, management, and troubleshooting.
  • Strong background in virtualization technologies, with experience in creating, managing, and scaling virtual environments to support organizational needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex technical issues and develop effective, scalable solutions.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with a focus on identifying root causes and implementing preventive measures.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively across departments, with an emphasis on aligning infrastructure solutions with business objectives.
  • Commitment to delivering high-quality technical solutions that meet client needs and enhance user experiences.
  • Adaptability to changing client requirements and industry standards.
  • Enthusiasm for staying updated on emerging technologies and best practices in infrastructure engineering.
  • Strong commitment to technical excellence and a proactive approach to self-improvement and knowledge-sharing within the team.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent work experience.
  • Relevant certifications such as CCNA, CCNP, CISSP, VMware VCP, or equivalent experience with multi-vendor environments.
