What does a senior endpoint engineer do?

A Senior Endpoint Engineer is responsible for managing, securing, and maintaining an organization's endpoint devices, such as laptops, desktops, and mobile devices. They design, implement, and support endpoint management solutions to ensure devices remain secure, compliant, and up-to-date. Their role often includes deploying software, troubleshooting device issues, enforcing security policies, and collaborating with IT and security teams to protect company data. They also stay updated on the latest threats and technologies to continually improve endpoint security and management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior endpoint engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Endpoint Engineer, you need advanced knowledge of endpoint security, device management, and operating systems, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in IT or a related field. Expertise in tools like Microsoft Endpoint Manager (Intune), SCCM, JAMF, and relevant security certifications such as CompTIA Security+ or Microsoft Certified: Security, Compliance, and Identity Fundamentals are often required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you excel in diagnosing issues and collaborating with teams. These skills ensure secure, efficient management of devices across an organization, protecting data and supporting operational continuity.

What are some common challenges faced by senior endpoint engineers in managing a large-scale device environment?

Senior Endpoint Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring consistent security policy enforcement, managing diverse operating systems and device types, and keeping up with frequent software updates across thousands of endpoints. Balancing streamlined user experience with strict security requirements can also be demanding. Effective collaboration with IT support, security teams, and end users is crucial to quickly resolve issues and maintain device compliance across the organization.

What is the difference between Senior Endpoint Engineer vs Endpoint Security Specialist?

Job description

Job Description

The Role

The Senior Application Packaging Engineer is responsible for defining, building, and continuously improving how General Motors packages, tests, deploys, updates, and maintains end user applications across the enterprise.

This role helps shape the engineering practices and operational execution required to modernize a well-established application packaging and deployment process across Windows, macOS, Linux, and other managed endpoint environments. You will evolve this process into a more agile, technology-enabled model that leverages modern tools and best practices to reduce manual work, improve turnaround time, and support release cycles ranging from multiple updates per week to periodic quarterly releases, while continuously refining the existing guardrails for how applications are packaged, validated, deployed, monitored, and updated - including standards for silent installs, detection logic, rollback planning, dependency management, deployment rings, user notifications, and success measurement.

This role partners closely with endpoint engineering, platform teams, security, infrastructure, service operations, and application owners to translate packaging and deployment requirements into scalable engineering processes, automation, and reliable service delivery.

What You'll Do

  • Own the application packaging and deployment engineering strategy as part of the broader End User Engineering mission

  • Reshape and redesign the application packaging process into a modern, agile model that leverages newer technologies, automation, and reusable patterns to deliver packages faster with less manual effort

  • Simplify packaging approaches for software with limited customization requirements by driving more standardized, repeatable, and low-touch delivery patterns

  • Package, test, and maintain enterprise applications for deployment across modern endpoint management platforms including SCCM, Intune, JAMF, and similar tooling

  • Design and operate deployment campaigns that support release cadences ranging from multiple times per week to a few times per year with minimal to no disruption to end users

  • Build and maintain packaging standards for application installation, configuration, updates, patching, uninstall, rollback, and remediation

  • Develop silent install packages, detection methods, dependency handling, pre-flight checks, post-install validation, and user communication patterns

  • Create phased deployment strategies using pilot groups, ring-based rollouts, maintenance windows, and controlled production releases

  • Partner with application owners, security teams, and support teams to validate application readiness, compatibility, licensing, and deployment requirements

  • Automate recurring packaging, testing, deployment, and reporting workflows to improve consistency, quality, and speed

  • Troubleshoot packaging failures, deployment issues, application conflicts, and endpoint-specific installation challenges across platforms

  • Define and track operational metrics related to deployment success, failure rates, user disruption, install duration, compliance, and remediation outcomes

  • Maintain documentation, packaging standards, runbooks, and support guidance for packaged applications and deployment processes

  • Contribute to roadmap planning by identifying opportunities to modernize application delivery, reduce manual effort, and improve the end user software experience

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or equivalent experience

  • 6+ years in application packaging, endpoint engineering, endpoint management, client engineering, or related infrastructure roles

  • Strong hands-on experience packaging and deploying applications in one or more enterprise platforms such as SCCM, Intune, JAMF, Landscape, Chef, or similar tools

  • Experience designing and executing deployment campaigns for applications with varying update frequencies and business criticality

  • Experience building application packages with reliable silent install behavior, detection logic, dependency handling, version control, and uninstall support

  • Hands-on experience supporting application deployment across Windows, macOS, Linux, and/or VDI in a medium-to-large enterprise environment

  • Strong understanding of deployment ring strategies, pilot validation, change control, rollback planning, and end user communication for software releases

  • Experience with scripting and automation using PowerShell, Bash, Python, or similar technologies

  • Experience troubleshooting installation failures, packaging defects, compatibility issues, and policy-driven deployment problems

  • Demonstrated ability to balance deployment speed, user experience, operational stability, and supportability

  • Excellent communication skills and comfort working across engineering, security, infrastructure, service operations, and business partners

  • Solid background in:

  • Application packaging standards and lifecycle management

  • Enterprise software deployment and patching strategies

  • Detection rules, supersedence, dependency management, and remediation logic

  • Silent install and uninstall methodologies

  • Phased rollout design and production change governance

  • Packaging documentation, operational support, and service readiness practices

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with modern application lifecycle and software distribution practices in large-scale enterprise environments

  • Experience building reusable packaging frameworks, templates, or automation pipelines

  • Experience with software catalog management, self-service application delivery, and policy-based app assignment

  • Familiarity with application compatibility testing, code signing, licensing constraints, and vendor release management

  • Experience with reporting and visualization tools used to monitor deployment health and operational performance

  • Understanding of security and compliance requirements related to enterprise application deployment

  • Familiarity with Zero Trust principles and how application delivery integrates with endpoint posture and access controls

  • Experience supporting executive reporting, operational reviews, or service performance management

What Success Looks Like

  • Applications are packaged consistently and deployed reliably across supported endpoint platforms

  • Software updates reach the right users at the right time with minimal business disruption and limited support escalations

  • Deployment campaigns are measurable, repeatable, and scalable across frequent and infrequent release cycles

  • Engineering and support teams have clear standards, documentation, and reporting for application deployment health

  • Packaging and deployment issues are identified early through testing, pilot validation, and operational monitoring

  • The end user experience improves through predictable software delivery, fewer failed installs, and reduced manual intervention
