AspectSenior Electrical DesignerElectrical Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in electrical engineering or related field; certifications like PE or LEED are commonRequires a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering; PE license often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign-focused roles in consulting firms, construction, or industrial settingsDesign, analysis, and project management in various industries including manufacturing, utilities, and construction
ResponsibilitiesCreating electrical schematics, ensuring code compliance, and supporting constructionDesigning systems, performing calculations, overseeing project development, and ensuring safety standards

While both roles require electrical engineering knowledge, Senior Electrical Designers focus more on detailed design and drafting, whereas Electrical Engineers often handle broader engineering analysis and project oversight.

What are the most common challenges Senior Electrical Designers face when working on multidisciplinary project teams?

Senior Electrical Designers often collaborate with architects, mechanical engineers, and construction managers, which can present coordination challenges, especially when integrating electrical systems into complex building designs. Balancing project deadlines while ensuring all electrical plans comply with safety codes and client requirements is a frequent challenge. Clear communication and proactive problem-solving are essential, as resolving conflicts between disciplines early helps avoid costly changes later in the project lifecycle.

What Does a Senior Electrical Designer Do?

As a senior electrical designer, your job is to use electrical knowledge and design principles to develop electrical drawings for each project you take. This includes determining what equipment can be used, ensuring the final electrical plan meets the client's needs and specifications, and verifying construction status in the field to ensure the plan represents as-built conditions. Senior electrical designers frequently check design drawings from suppliers and other resources, provide on-site support during construction, ensure plans comply with all relevant installation codes, and interact with contractors and subcontractors. This job requires a moderate amount of travel and the ability to cooperate with a team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Electrical Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Electrical Designer, you need in-depth knowledge of electrical design principles, proficiency in creating detailed schematics, and typically a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Expertise in CAD software (such as AutoCAD or Revit), familiarity with industry codes (like NEC), and relevant certifications (such as PE licensure) are commonly expected. Strong problem-solving, project management, and communication skills help you collaborate effectively and lead design initiatives. These competencies ensure accurate, safe, and efficient electrical systems that meet project specifications and regulatory standards.

Job description

Ensuring Chart's Success...
Cooler By Design" - Chart's principal focus is the design and fabrication of cryogenic equipment; so you can see where we get our tagline from, right? Well, yes and no - see, we think the stuff we design and build is pretty cool too. What's more, we're problem solvers. Customers don't come to Chart with an equipment specification, they come to Chart with a challenge. That's where you come in, because someone has to figure it out, all the way from conceptual design to installation and commissioning of equipment at site. The applications we service are pretty diverse (and cool) too - from solutions for launching rockets into space; to providing low carbon energy for vehicles, industries and even entire communities; to the preservation of critical human and animal tissue. Pop into a well-known fast food outlet and it'll likely be Chart equipment supplying your carbonated beverage. If nitro coffee or nitro ice cream is your thing - well, that's Chart technology too (and it's also cool)! Interested to learn more? Take a tour of Chart City to get a feel of how Chart equipment solutions impact our daily lives.
