Work EnvironmentDesign offices, CAD labs, project sitesDesign, testing, and project management environments
ResponsibilitiesCreating detailed electrical schematics and layouts using CAD softwareDesigning electrical systems, performing calculations, overseeing implementation

Electrical Cad Designers focus on creating detailed electrical drawings and layouts using CAD software, while Electrical Engineers are involved in designing, analyzing, and overseeing electrical systems. Both roles require technical knowledge, but Electrical Engineers typically hold higher degrees and have broader responsibilities in system design and project management.

What is an Electrical CAD Designer?

An Electrical CAD Designer is a professional who creates detailed electrical schematics, layouts, and diagrams using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software. They collaborate with engineers and other team members to design and document electrical systems for buildings, machinery, or products. Their work ensures that electrical designs are accurate, meet safety standards, and are ready for manufacturing or construction. Electrical CAD Designers often update and revise drawings based on feedback and project requirements.

What are some common challenges Electrical CAD Designers face when working on multidisciplinary engineering projects?

Electrical CAD Designers often collaborate closely with mechanical, civil, and architectural teams to ensure that electrical schematics integrate seamlessly with other design elements. One common challenge is maintaining clear communication and coordination across disciplines, especially when resolving clashes or changes in design specifications. Additionally, managing revisions while keeping all documentation up-to-date and adhering to industry standards requires strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Proactively participating in team meetings and utilizing collaborative software tools can help navigate these challenges effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical CAD Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical CAD Designer, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, circuit design, and proficiency with drafting, often backed by an associate's degree or certification in electrical design or drafting. Expertise in CAD software such as AutoCAD Electrical, Revit, or SolidWorks Electrical, as well as familiarity with electrical codes and standards, is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills help ensure accuracy and effective collaboration with engineers and other team members. These skills and qualifications are essential for producing precise electrical schematics and layouts that meet project requirements and industry regulations.

Design the Future of Utility Systems

We’re seeking a detail-oriented Electrical CAD Designer to join our Trussville, Alabama team. In this role, you’ll support electrical design efforts across both our electric utility and water/wastewater utility teams, producing detailed CAD drawings and control panel designs that form the backbone of vital infrastructure throughout the Southeastern United States.

You’ll work directly with engineers and project managers to develop high-quality drawing packages used in the design, construction, and commissioning of substation and control panel systems. This is an excellent opportunity for a designer who enjoys hands-on, technical design work and wants to see their projects make a real impact on essential services across communities.

What You’ll Do

  • Create and modify electrical design packages for control and RTU panels serving electric, water, and wastewater utility customers.
  • Develop detailed one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, schematics, and panel layouts.
  • Utilize AutoCAD and sometimes MicroStation to produce accurate, industry-standard drawing sets.
  • Work closely with engineers to implement design changes and ensure compliance with project and client standards.
  • Coordinate documentation updates, redlines, and as-built revisions.
  • Support integration of control wiring, instrumentation, and communication systems across multiple utility disciplines.
  • Maintain drawing organization, file management, and revision control throughout project lifecycles.
  • Uphold a high standard of drafting accuracy and attention to detail.

What You Bring

  • Experience: 3–10 years of CAD design experience in the power or utility industries (experience in water/wastewater systems a plus).
  • Software Proficiency: Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD and familiarity with MicroStation with the aptitude to become proficient.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Understanding of electrical and control panel design principles.
    • Ability to interpret engineering sketches and specifications into professional CAD drawings.
    • Familiarity with substation, RTU, PLC, or instrumentation wiring practices.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Extremely detail-oriented with strong organizational abilities.
    • Flexible and collaborative—able to work across multiple teams and utility customers.
    • Excellent communication and commitment to delivering quality work.

Why You’ll Love Working in Trussville
