What are Seasonal Semiconductor Device Engineers?

Seasonal Semiconductor Device Engineers are professionals who work on a temporary or contract basis, typically during peak production seasons, to design, test, and optimize semiconductor devices such as transistors, diodes, or integrated circuits. Their responsibilities may include supporting fabrication processes, conducting device analysis, troubleshooting issues, and assisting in new product development. These engineers often possess specialized knowledge in semiconductor physics, materials science, and electronic engineering. Their seasonal roles help companies meet increased demand or work on specific projects requiring additional expertise in a short timeframe.

What are the main challenges faced by Seasonal Semiconductor Device Engineers during peak production periods?

Seasonal Semiconductor Device Engineers often encounter tight deadlines and rapidly changing priorities during peak production periods, which can require quick adaptation to new tasks or shifts in project focus. Additionally, they may need to collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, such as process engineers and quality control, to address unexpected technical issues or yield fluctuations. Effective communication and strong problem-solving skills are essential to ensure smooth production flow and maintain product quality. This dynamic environment provides valuable hands-on experience and exposure to advanced manufacturing processes, which can be beneficial for future career growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Seasonal Semiconductor Device Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Seasonal Semiconductor Device Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, semiconductor physics, and device fabrication, often supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency with simulation tools (such as TCAD), laboratory instrumentation, and data analysis software is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are important soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are critical for ensuring precise device performance, efficient troubleshooting, and successful project outcomes during the seasonal employment period.

Job description

About Helion
We are a fusion power company based in Everett, WA, with the mission to build the world's first fusion power plant, enabling a future with unlimited clean electricity. Our vision is a world with clean, reliable, and affordable energy for everyone.
Since Helion's founding in 2013, we have raised $1.5 billion from long-time investors such as Sam Altman, Mithril, and Capricorn Investment Group as well as new investors including Thrive Capital, LightSpeed Venture Capital, SoftBank, and others to propel us forward. Our current prototype, Polaris, has reached record-breaking plasma temperatures of 150 million degrees Celsius (13 keV). Helion is continuing to iterate and on the path to the world's first fusion power plant, Orion.
This is a pivotal time to join Helion. You will tackle real-world challenges with a team that prizes urgency, rigor, ownership, and a commitment to delivering hard truths - values essential to achieving what no one has before. Together, we will change the future of energy, because the world can't wait.
What You Will Be Doing:
You will drive the design and development of cutting-edge semiconductors for high-performance pulsed power systems used in Helion's fusion generators. You will work in a fast-paced environment to develop, test, and implement high-reliability, high-efficiency switching components, with a strong emphasis on rapid development cycles. You will report directly to our Senior Manager of Electrical Engineering, and this is an onsite role located at our Everett, WA office.
You Will:
  • Spearhead efforts to gather and utilize requirements for switching components and apply them toward design of physical products
  • Drive the design and development of novel pulsed power electronics components and systems, focusing on high-efficiency, high-reliability semiconductor solutions
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure integration of electrical, mechanical, and physics-based principles in semiconductor development
  • Lead development cycles, including hands-on prototyping, small-scale testing, and large-scale performance validation
  • Conduct simulations, testing, and analysis to validate designs and iterate quickly using data-backed decision making
  • Stay informed on emerging semiconductor materials, device architectures, and industry trends
  • Document design processes, specifications, test results, and findings for continuous improvement and knowledge sharing

Required Skills:
  • Bachelor's, Master's, or higher degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field
  • 8+ years of experience in power electronics and high voltage semiconductor design
  • Strong foundation in semiconductor physics, power electronics, and circuit design principles
  • Proven experience with rapid prototyping and development cycles in a high-tech environment
  • Background working with semiconductor fabricators to manufacture semiconductor devices
  • Proficiency with simulation tools and test equipment for power electronics
