What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Semiconductor Quality Reliability Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Semiconductor Quality Reliability Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, materials science, and semiconductor device physics, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in quality control or reliability testing. Familiarity with reliability analysis tools (like Weibull analysis), failure analysis techniques, and quality management systems (such as ISO 9001) is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective cross-functional communication set outstanding professionals apart in this role. These skills ensure product reliability, compliance with industry standards, and the delivery of high-quality semiconductor devices to market.

What are the main challenges Semiconductor Quality Reliability Engineers face when working with new technology nodes?

Semiconductor Quality Reliability Engineers working with new technology nodes often encounter challenges such as managing unknown failure mechanisms, ensuring device reliability under accelerated testing, and adapting to rapidly evolving process changes. These engineers must collaborate closely with design, process, and manufacturing teams to identify potential risks early and develop robust reliability test plans. Staying up-to-date with industry standards and best practices is crucial to address these challenges effectively and maintain product quality throughout the development cycle.

What does a Semiconductor Quality Reliability Engineer do?

A Semiconductor Quality Reliability Engineer is responsible for ensuring that semiconductor products meet quality and reliability standards throughout their lifecycle. They design and implement tests to evaluate product reliability, analyze failure data, and work with design and manufacturing teams to address any issues. Their role is crucial in identifying potential defects early and ensuring that products perform consistently under various conditions. This helps minimize failures in the field and maintains customer trust in the company's products.

What is the difference between Semiconductor Quality Reliability Engineer vs Semiconductor Process Engineer?

AspectSemiconductor Quality Reliability EngineerSemiconductor Process Engineer
Primary FocusEnsuring product reliability and quality through testing and analysisDeveloping and optimizing manufacturing processes for semiconductor fabrication
Required SkillsReliability testing, failure analysis, quality standardsProcess development, equipment operation, process control
Work EnvironmentQuality labs, testing facilities, manufacturing plantsCleanrooms, fabrication facilities, process labs
Common CertificationsISO standards, Six Sigma, reliability testing certificationsProcess engineering certifications, SEMI standards

The Semiconductor Quality Reliability Engineer focuses on ensuring the reliability and quality of semiconductor products through testing and analysis, while the Semiconductor Process Engineer concentrates on developing and refining manufacturing processes. Both roles are essential in the semiconductor industry and often collaborate to produce high-quality, reliable chips efficiently.

Job description

Celero Communications is seeking a Quality & Reliability Engineer to own and execute our IC reliability strategy and serve as a key leader in customer-facing quality engineering. This role is responsible for defining reliability qualification plans, establishing a Known Good Die (KGD) qualification methodology, and developing a robust RMA strategy. The ideal candidate will work cross-functionally with product engineering, test engineering, and design engineering to ensure high-quality, reliable semiconductor products that meet both internal and customer requirements.

Key Responsibilities

IC Reliability & Qualification

  • Define, implement, and maintain Celero's IC reliability strategy and qualification plan across products and technologies.
  • Own reliability qualification activities, including JEDEC-based testing, stress testing, characterization, and data analysis.
  • Develop and maintain Known Good Die (KGD) qualification methodologies, including screening, test coverage requirements, and acceptance criteria.
  • Review reliability data and provide clear risk assessments and recommendations to engineering and management.
  • Support new product introductions with reliability planning and gate reviews.

RMA & Failure Analysis Strategy

  • Develop and own the RMA strategy, including processes, metrics, escalation paths, and customer communication.
  • Lead failure analysis for returned materials in collaboration with internal teams and external labs.
  • Drive corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) based on RMA trends and root cause analysis.
  • Establish RMA dashboards and KPIs to track field performance and continuous improvement.

Customer Quality Engineering

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for customer quality engineering topics.
  • Support customer audits, quality reviews, and reliability discussions.
  • Respond to customer quality and reliability concerns with timely, technically sound communication.
  • Represent Celero in customer meetings related to product quality, reliability, and failure analysis.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with product engineering to influence architecture, materials, and specifications for reliability.
  • Partner with design engineering to identify potential reliability risks early in the design cycle.
  • Collaborate with test engineering to ensure appropriate test coverage for reliability, screening, and KGD requirements.
  • Drive cross-functional reviews and lessons learned to improve processes and product robustness.

Qualifications Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience in semiconductor quality and/or reliability engineering.
  • Hands-on experience with IC reliability standards (e.g., JEDEC, HTOL, HAST, TC, ESD, Latch-up).
  • Strong understanding of Known Good Die (KGD) concepts, test strategies, and wafer-level qualification.
  • Experience developing and managing RMA and failure analysis processes.
  • Excellent analytical, documentation, and technical communication skills.

Preferred

  • Master's degree in a related technical discipline.
  • Experience supporting customer quality engineering in a fabless or IDM environment.
  • Familiarity with advanced packaging, chiplets, or multi-die systems.
  • Knowledge of quality systems such as ISO 9001, IATF 16949, or similar frameworks.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.

What Success Looks Like

  • Clearly defined and scalable IC reliability and KGD qualification strategies.
  • Reduced field failures and improved customer confidence through effective RMA management.
  • Strong, trusted relationships with customers and internal engineering teams.
  • Proactive identification and mitigation of reliability risks throughout the product lifecycle.
