Job description

American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Med/Surg Float Pool position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring a minimum of 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience and an AL or compact RN license.
Job Details
• Work setting is a 492-bed Level II Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center with a Level III NICU,
• Assigned to the Staff Float Pool Med/Surg, with a permanent home unit assigned on the first day of orientation,
• Possible unit placements include: 6 North Trauma Surgical (general and vascular surgery), 5 South Neuroscience (CVA, TBI, seizure, craniotomy, spinal fusion, etc.), 5 North Med/Surg Oncology (MS/Oncology, palliative care, ETOH withdrawal), 4 South Clinical Decision Unit (general Med/Surg including COPD, CHF, sepsis, end of life), 3 South Orthopedics (joint replacements, fractures, fusions), and 3 North MS/Ortho/Urology (urology, ENT, ortho, Med/Surg),
• Patient ratios range from 1:5 to 1:6 depending on unit assignment,
• Telemetry is monitored by telemetry techs; RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours,
• EMR is Cerner (preferred),
• IV pumps: Plum 360; medication dispensing: Omnicell; monitors: Spacelabs,
• Schedule is 12-hour day shifts (7:00 AM-7:00 PM) at 36 hours per week; night shifts (7:00 PM-7:00 AM) may also be available,
• Weekend rotation of every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month is required,
• Floating may occur to like units (e.g., Med/Surg to Med/Surg, Med/Surg to ICU tasks, Med/Surg to ER holds),
• No on-call responsibilities,
• Scheduling follows a 4-week cycle using Smart Square; self-scheduling is not available,
Job Requirements
• Active AL RN license or compact RN license required (can be pending at time of consideration, but ETA must be provided),
• Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required,
• Minimum of 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience required,
• Cerner EMR experience required if candidate has strictly ICU background; Cerner or Epic experience required for all candidates,
• Trauma or surgical experience of at least 1 year required for trauma/surgical unit placement,
• Chemo administration certification preferred for Oncology unit placement,
• Telemetry strip interpretation experience is a plus and should be noted if applicable,
• Clinical skills required vary by unit and may include: wound care, chest tubes, NGT, IV starts, trach care, PEG tubes, central line blood draws, ostomy/colostomy care, PCA pumps, wound vacs, CVL dressing changes, and foley care,
• One professional reference from a charge nurse or above from the past 12 months required for consideration,
• SSN, DOB (day and month), and copies of certifications required for consideration,
Additional Information
• Unit support includes CNAs (1:6 ratio for VS, ADLs, and glucose checks), a receptionist/HUC, charge nurse (rarely takes assignment), phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, hospitalist, and telemetry monitoring techs,
• Orientation for new travelers or those returning after 1+ year includes 24 hours of classroom time and 24 hours on the unit,
• Holiday coverage is required for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy; holiday scheduling is not guaranteed in advance of arrival,
• Pre-approval is available for up to 7 days off, excluding blackout dates which require manager approval,
• No scrub color restriction - any color is acceptable,
• Parking is available in the parking deck on levels 2 through 4 only,
• Candidates must reside more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible,
• First-time travelers are welcome to apply with the required experience,
• Former permanent staff must wait 6 months from their last shift worked before being eligible to return as a traveler,
• Travelers who have previously worked at this facility and have been gone for 1 year or more will follow the standard new traveler orientation; rehires within that window will have orientation determined on a case-by-case basis,
