Seasonal Functional Capacity Evaluation information

What is the difference between Seasonal Functional Capacity Evaluation vs Physical Therapist?

AspectSeasonal Functional Capacity EvaluationPhysical Therapist
CredentialsTypically requires certification in functional assessments, sometimes a background in occupational healthLicensed healthcare professional with a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree and state licensure
Work EnvironmentPerformed in clinics, workplaces, or industrial settings, often on a temporary or seasonal basisWorks in clinics, hospitals, or rehab centers, providing ongoing patient care
Industry UsageUsed mainly in occupational health, insurance, and workers' compensation casesUsed across healthcare, rehabilitation, and outpatient therapy settings

While both roles involve assessing physical capabilities, a Seasonal Functional Capacity Evaluation focuses on evaluating an individual's ability to perform specific work-related tasks, often in occupational health contexts. A Physical Therapist provides comprehensive rehabilitation and ongoing therapy to improve mobility and function. The evaluation is typically shorter and more targeted, whereas physical therapy involves continuous treatment plans.

Who can perform a seasonal functional capacity evaluation?

A qualified healthcare professional such as a physical or occupational therapist, or a trained evaluator with certification in functional capacity assessments, can perform a seasonal functional capacity evaluation. These evaluations typically require knowledge of occupational demands and may involve specific testing tools and documentation standards.
