Job description

Support and assist the head coach as needed to ensure the success of the team.

JOB SUMMARY

The Assistant Lacrosse Coach / Defensive Coordinator is responsible for assisting the Head Coach in all aspects of the men's lacrosse program, with primary oversight of the defensive unit. This position plays a key role in player development, recruiting, practice planning, game preparation, and program administration while supporting the mission and culture of the program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Defensive Coordinator Duties

Design, implement, and oversee the team's defensive philosophy and systems.

Plan and conduct defensive individual, group, and team training practices.

Develop scouting reports and defensive game plans for opponents.

Coordinate film breakdown and analysis for defensive personnel.

Evaluate defensive performance and make strategic adjustments throughout the season.

Mentor and develop defensemen, long-stick midfielders, and defensive specialists.

Practice Planning & Player Development

Assist the Head Coach with the planning, organization, and execution of daily practices.

Design and lead practice segments focused on defensive development, transition play, and team concepts.

Develop seasonal practice plans that align with team goals and objectives.

Monitor and evaluate player progress throughout the year.

Recruitment Coordinator Responsibilities

Serve as the program's Recruiting Coordinator.

Develop and manage the annual recruiting calendar.

Identify, evaluate, and recruit prospective student-athletes who fit the program's athletic, academic, and cultural standards.

Maintain communication with prospective student-athletes, families, coaches, and recruiting contacts.

Help coordinate campus visits, prospect days, and recruiting events.

Maintain recruiting databases and prospect evaluation records.

Build and maintain relationships with high school, club, and junior college coaches.

Game Preparation & Competition

Assist with opponent scouting and game preparation.

Develop detailed scouting reports and personnel evaluations.

Participate in game-day coaching responsibilities.

Assist with in-game adjustments and strategy implementation.

Evaluate team and individual performance following competition.

Administrative Responsibilities

Support equipment and apparel management.

Help coordinate camps, clinics, and fundraising events.

Maintain compliance with institutional, conference, league, and governing body regulations.

Support social media, marketing, and promotional initiatives as needed.

Student-Athlete Development

Foster a culture of accountability, discipline, and personal growth.

Support student-athletes in their academic and personal development.

Monitor academic progress and encourage academic success.

Serve as a positive mentor and role model.

Promote leadership development and team culture initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS

Required

Bachelor's degree.

Collegiate coaching and/or playing experience.

Strong knowledge of defensive lacrosse concepts and strategy.

Demonstrated recruiting experience and relationship-building skills.

Excellent communication and organizational abilities.

Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel as required.

Preferred

Previous experience as a Defensive Coordinator at the collegiate or high-level club level.

Experience coordinating recruiting operations.

Knowledge of film analysis software and recruiting platforms.

Experience with camp and clinic management.

Master's degree.

Work Environment

The coach works in a variety of environments, including office settings, athletic facilities, outdoor fields, and during extensive team travel. Responsibilities involve prolonged periods of standing, walking, demonstrating athletic skills, and supervising student-athletes during practices and competitions. The role may require lifting and carrying athletic equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. The coach must be able to work in varying weather conditions and maintain focus and decision-making abilities in high-pressure, competitive environments.

Driving Requirements

If the employee is required to travel in performing the duties and responsibilities of the position, the use of one's personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) may be required for travel. Proof of a valid driver's license, an acceptable DMV record, LU Driving Approval, and liability insurance is required when driving in the performance of the employee's position.

Pay Range

Compensation is determined based on factors such as qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, along with University needs and external market conditions. Market benchmarks may be used, as appropriate, in combination with internal equity to ensure pay is fair and aligned with the broader compensation structure.


The position may also be eligible for comprehensive benefits, including health insurance, retirement plans, and tuition assistance.
