Job description

The University of Lynchburg, a private, regional university in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Central Virginia, is seeking applicants for Full-time  Head Women’s Basketball Coach position in the Athletics Department.

This position reports to, is supervised by, and evaluated by the Athletic Director. The evaluation of work performance will be ongoing and will be carried out by the Athletic Director.. It will include the specific duties and responsibilities of this position description plus employee attitude and general working behavior.

Job Duties: 

Administrative and Office Management

  • Direct and supervise assistant coaches, graduate assistants, and work-study students so as to provide a positive learning experience while maximizing their personal competence and ability.
  • Attend athletic staff meetings and other official functions of the University that enhance the perception of the Women's Basketball program.
  • Maintain regular posted office hours and fulfill daily routine responsibilities.
  • Work with the support staff (Administrative Assistant, Athletic Trainer, Facilities Coordinator, Sports Information Director, Strength and Conditioning, Digital Media, etc.) by providing information such as schedules, rosters, and required paperwork.
  • Monitor building security and take appropriate actions to secure facilities and maintain a safe environment.

Coaching

  • Must be knowledgeable of all rules and guidelines set by the University of Lynchburg, the ODAC and the NCAA.
  • Conduct well organized practice sessions to include tactics and techniques for the team and individualized instruction to assist the student-athletes in reaching their fullest potential.
  • Maintain attitude of positive team spirit, morale, self-confidence and self-determination for the student-athlete
  • Oversee game day operations including field and/or course /facility preparations. Problems and/or concerns are to be reported immediately to the Director of Athletics.

Scouting opposing teams

  • Enforce team rules and Athletic Department guidelines and policies in an equitable and consistent manner.
  • Establish a learning environment to encourage academic success for student-athletes by monitoring academic progress and encouraging the use of academic support services.

Prepare athletic contest schedules

  • Provide the necessary information to prepare athletic game contracts.
  • Attend workshops, clinics, conferences, and conventions when practical to improve and maintain job skills.
  • Prepare team travel arrangements through the Transportation Coordinator and/or follow stated guidelines regarding transportation to include driving University vehicles.
  • Conducting camps and/or clinics at the University of Lynchburg as possible.

Recruiting

  • Identify and recruit academically and athletically qualified student-athletes.
  • Prepare grammatically correct written correspondence in a timely and organized manner to include mass mailings and personal letters to top prospective student-athletes.
  • Maintain data files for prospective student-athlete contacts to include name, address, and other vital information as pertinent.
  • Make recruiting telephone calls to prospective student-athletes on a regular and consistent basis. Maintain telephone logs.
  • Contact high school coaches to identify potential prospective student-athletes.
  • Visitation of schools, and athletic competition, including tournament play, of prospective student-athletes is encouraged.
  • Encourage on-campus visits of prospective student-athletes and arrange to meet with them and their family members while they are visiting.
  • Attendance at Student Open Houses is encouraged.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree and successful coaching background

Preferred qualifications:

  • Masters degree and collegiate playing or coaching experience in a successful program
