#W2 Role

Job Title - Product Owner

Remote Role

Role Overview

We are seeking aย Senior Product Ownerย to lead the discovery and delivery of aย custom-built Order Management System (OMS)ย for Costco. This role is part of aย Discovery Podย focused on transforming aย legacy OMSย into aย modern, microservicesโ€‘based architecture.

The Product Owner will operate in aย highโ€‘ambiguity environment, building OMS capabilitiesย from the ground upโ€”often with limited business SME availabilityโ€”while guiding distributed onshore and offshore engineering teams. This role requires deep ownership of requirements, strong backend and financial workflow understanding, and the ability to proactively apply OMS best practices rather than rely on existing product frameworks.

This role requires aย rare combinationย of:

  • Strong SAFe Product Owner craftย (PI readiness, backlog hygiene, dependency/risk management)ย and
  • Current, hands-on OMS domain expertiseย across core modules (order lifecycle, fulfillment, returns/refunds, cancellations, inventory/sourcing).

Because SME availability may be limited, the PO must be able toย lead requirements proactivelyย and applyย industry OMS best practices.

Key Responsibilities

1) Quarterly & PI Planning Readiness (SAFe)

  • Plan ahead acrossย quarterly and PI horizonsย by preparingย clear objectives, scope options, and sequencing aligned toย outcome-based goalsย (OKR/WhatMatters.com style).
  • Provide high-quality PI inputs:ย feature prioritization, dependency mapping, risk identification, and capacity assumptions.
  • Ensureย traceability from objectives โ†’ features โ†’ stories, with clear success measures.

2) Backlog Ownership & Execution Readiness

  • Own and continuously refine aย prioritized team backlog.
  • Ensure near-term work isย Definition of Ready (DoR)ย compliant: clear acceptance criteria, workflows, and testable outcomes.
  • Maintain refinement and visibilityย 1โ€“2 PIs aheadย while keeping next sprint โ€œexecution-ready.โ€

3) OMS Domain Leadership (Must be hands-on)

  • Lead discovery and delivery for OMS capabilities across:
    • Order lifecycleย (create โ†’ process โ†’ fulfill โ†’ deliver/complete)
    • Omnichannel fulfillmentย (Pickup, Delivery, Ship-to-Home, Ship-to-Store)
    • Cancellations, returns, refunds
    • Inventory availability, sourcing, vendor/DFC flows
    • Post-order modificationsย (adjustments/markdowns/discount rules, where applicable)
  • Define business rules, guardrails, and negative/exception scenarios (e.g., fraud prevention, validation failures, retries, compensations).

4) Technical & Architectural Foresight (Integration-heavy)

  • Partner with engineering/architecture to identify:
    • Technical enablers
    • Non-functional requirements (performance, resiliency, observability)
    • Platform/integration constraints early
  • Sequence functional and technical work to reduce rework and integration risk.
  • Be comfortable discussingย APIs,ย events/messages, integration patterns, and end-to-end flows.

5) Dependency, Risk, and Outcome Management

  • Proactively manage cross-team/cross-ART dependencies.
  • Surface risks early and drive mitigation with Product Management, RTEs, and peer POs.
  • Inspect outcomes using delivery + product metrics; adjust plans within PI/quarter based on learning.

Required Skills & Experience (Must-Haves)

  • OMS domain depth (non-negotiable):
9โ€“12 yearsย working with enterprise OMS platforms (Manhattan, Blue Yonder, IBM Sterling, or custom-built OMS).
Must demonstrateย credible module expertiseย (not just โ€œworked around OMSโ€).
  • Recent OMS experience:
Meaningful OMS work within theย last 24โ€“36 monthsย (to avoid steep learning curve).
  • Product Owner experience:
6โ€“7+ yearsย as a PO (or equivalent) inย Agile/SAFeย environments.
  • SAFe execution mastery:ย PI Planning readiness, backlog refinement, OKR/DoR/DoD, dependency/risk management.
  • Product craft excellence:ย user stories, workflows, journey maps, acceptance criteria.
  • Retail / eCommerce / fulfillment domain exposure; omnichannel journey experience (Pickup, Delivery, Ship-to-Home, Returns).
  • Technical fluency:ย comfortable discussingย APIs + event/message flows + integration patterns + system architectureย with engineers.
