What is a proxy product owner?

A Proxy Product Owner (PPO) is a role that bridges the gap between the actual Product Owner and the development team, often in large organizations or outsourcing scenarios. They help refine and clarify requirements, ensure smooth communication, and support backlog management while aligning with the Product Owner's vision. While they facilitate decision-making, the final authority on product priorities and strategy typically remains with the actual Product Owner.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a proxy product owner?

A Proxy Product Owner needs a solid understanding of Agile methodologies, business analysis, and industry-specific processes, typically supported by experience in product management or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools like Jira, Confluence, and Agile certification (such as Scrum Product Owner) is highly valued. Standout candidates excel in communication, stakeholder management, and balancing competing priorities. These skills are crucial for ensuring clear translation of stakeholder needs to technical teams and successful delivery of product features.

What are some common challenges faced by proxy product owners, and how can they be addressed?

Proxy Product Owners often navigate the challenge of managing expectations between stakeholders and development teams, sometimes without having full decision-making authority. They must ensure consistent alignment on priorities and requirements while handling frequent changes in project scope. Building strong relationships and maintaining open communication channels within cross-functional teams is key to success in this role. Staying organized and proactive can help overcome ambiguity and keep projects moving forward smoothly.

How much does a proxy product owner get paid?

A proxy product owner typically earns between $80,000 and $130,000 annually, depending on experience, industry, and location. Compensation may also include bonuses and benefits, especially in tech or agile environments where certification and familiarity with tools like Jira are valued.

Job description

Position Overview
Blue Acorn iCi is seeking an Adobe Marketing Automation Proxy Product Owner to lead the technical execution of journey and campaign deliverables within Adobe Journey Optimizer (AJO). This person will translate marketing needs into actionable journey use cases, manage delivery priorities, and partner closely with automation specialists and business stakeholders through implementation.
The ideal candidate combines practical AJO delivery experience with strong product ownership, backlog prioritization, and communication skills. This is not a purely strategic product role; candidates should be comfortable owning the technical path from requirements through campaign and journey delivery.
Location: Chicago, IL or Milwaukee, WI
Key ResponsibilitiesTechnology Enablement
  • Own the technical execution and delivery of work within the marketing automation product function.
  • Translate marketing objectives and business requirements into clear AJO journey use cases, user stories, acceptance criteria, and delivery plans.
  • Design and implement customer journey use cases within Adobe Journey Optimizer.
  • Manage and continuously refine the backlog for journey and email campaign delivery.
  • Prioritize campaign requests in partnership with marketing stakeholders and automation specialists.
  • Coordinate technical execution across campaign configuration, journey orchestration, testing, approvals, deployment, and post-launch follow-up.
  • Partner with AJO specialists and adjacent technical teams to resolve dependencies, risks, data needs, and implementation constraints.
  • Maintain delivery visibility, identify blockers, and ensure work progresses according to agreed priorities and outcomes.
  • Support backlog refinement, sprint planning, release coordination, and continuous improvement of automation delivery processes.
  • Convert journey and campaign requests into clear, technically executable work.
  • Maintain visible, well-managed delivery priorities aligned to business value.
  • Provide automation specialists with the requirements, context, decisions, and support needed to deliver efficiently.
Business Engagement
  • Engage marketing and business stakeholders to understand campaign goals, requirements, priorities, and success criteria.
  • Translate technical concepts, dependencies, limitations, and delivery trade-offs into simple business language.
  • Connect platform complexity to stakeholder needs so that decisions and expectations remain clear throughout delivery.
  • Communicate progress, risks, decisions, and outcomes effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Help business stakeholders understand technical trade-offs, delivery status, risks, and outcomes without unnecessary complexity.
  • Ensure journeys and campaigns move reliably from intake through implementation and launch.
Required Skills & Experience
  • Demonstrated experience as a Product Owner, Proxy Product Owner, Marketing Automation Lead, MarTech Product Manager, or similar delivery-focused role.
  • Hands-on delivery experience with Adobe Journey Optimizer (AJO), including the design or implementation of customer journeys and campaign use cases.
  • Experience managing email or cross-channel campaign intake, backlogs, prioritization, and delivery with marketing automation specialists.
  • Ability to convert marketing requirements into technically actionable user stories, acceptance criteria, workflows, and release plans.
  • Strong understanding of journey orchestration, audience activation, campaign operations, testing, approvals, and deployment processes.
  • Experience partnering with marketing, product, data, engineering, analytics, and platform stakeholders.
  • Strong Agile product ownership skills, including backlog refinement, prioritization, sprint planning, and dependency management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, facilitation, expectation management, and stakeholder-facing presentation skills.
Platform Experience
Candidates should have experience with the following platforms and capabilities:
  • Core Product: Adobe Journey Optimizer (AJO)
  • Journey Delivery: Journey design, orchestration, implementation, testing, deployment, and optimization.
  • Campaign Operations: Email campaign intake, prioritization, production workflows, approvals, and delivery coordination.
  • Product Ownership: Requirements, user stories, acceptance criteria, backlog management, Agile delivery, and release planning.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience delivering AJO programs in a large enterprise or complex matrixed organization.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Experience Platform (AEP), audience/data dependencies, or adjacent Adobe Experience Cloud capabilities.
  • Experience coordinating delivery across internal teams, business stakeholders, implementation partners, or augmented resources.
  • Current residence in the Chicago or Milwaukee area, or a confirmed willingness to self-relocate.
Compensation
The base salary range for this position is $110,000-$150,000 annually. Actual compensation may vary depending on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors.
