What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sales engineer, and why are they important?
What is a sales engineer?
What does a sales engineer do?
As a sales engineer, your responsibilities are to serve as a technical advisor to prospective clients. Your duties may include helping customers decide what to buy for a project, demonstrating the use of products, providing instruction and support, and even performing installations. Companies typically ask sales engineers to sell complex technological or scientific products, which requires extensive knowledge of the parts and functions of each product, as well as related processes. You may also be asked to travel on a regular basis, present information to large crowds, or work irregular hours to meet sales goals and the needs of clients.
How do sales engineers typically collaborate with both technical teams and clients during the sales process?
What is the difference between Sales Engineer vs Technical Sales Representative?
| Aspect | Sales Engineer | Technical Sales Representative |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Bachelor's degree in engineering, technical field, or related certifications | Bachelor's degree, often in business or technical field, with sales certifications |
| Work Environment | Collaborates with engineering teams and clients, often in technical settings | Engages with clients primarily in sales meetings, trade shows, and client sites |
| Industry Usage | Common in manufacturing, technology, and industrial sectors | Prevalent in technology, software, and industrial sectors |
| Primary Focus | Technical product explanation, solution customization, and technical support | Customer engagement, product promotion, and closing sales |
While both roles require technical knowledge and sales skills, Sales Engineers focus on technical consultation and solution design, whereas Technical Sales Representatives emphasize client interaction and sales closing. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job role.

How You Will Contribute to Revolutionizing Electric Aviation:

- Support aircraft sales efforts by developing market assessments alongside technically credible performance, operational, and economic analyses to help evaluate product- market fit.
- Translate engineering outputs-aircraft performance, energy consumption, operating economics, infrastructure needs, and certification assumptions-into clear, customer-ready materials.
- Participate in customer meetings by supporting technical discussions and market analysis activities, helping address performance, operational, and regulatory questions.
- Support customer diligence, demonstrations, and early deployment planning with data-driven analysis.
- Develop, maintain, and continuously improve customer-facing analytical tools, models, and presentations to enable repeatable and scalable sales execution.
Assist in preparation of technical inputs for proposals, RFP responses, and sales presentations.
Market Analysis & Product Strategy Support:
- Synthesize market insights, sales engineering findings, and competitive benchmarking to support product positioning, differentiation, and roadmap development.
- Support development and communication of market-driven product requirements and priorities to Program Management and Product Development teams.
- Contribute to pricing, value proposition, and total cost of ownership analyses.
- Develop market assessments and competitive analyses to help identify commercial opportunities and quantify market size.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Work closely with Sales to prioritize opportunities and align technical and analytical support with commercial needs.
- Collaborate with Engineering and Product teams to ensure technical accuracy and consistency of customer-facing information.
- Coordinate with Marketing and Commercial teams to support go-to-market narratives and product messaging.
- Help standardize analysis methods, templates, and tools to improve efficiency and consistency across commercial activities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Aviation, or a related technical field.
- 2+ years of aviation industry experience in sales engineering, technical sales support, flight operations engineering, product strategy, product marketing, or similar roles in aerospace or aviation.
- Understanding of aircraft performance, operating economics, and aviation operations.
- Ability to translate complex technical data into clear, customer-facing insights.
- Experience developing analytical tools and models (advanced Excel required; Python or Matlab a plus), and presentations (advanced PowerPoint required).
- Familiarity with, and interest in, using AI-enabled tools to develop commercial materials, analyses, and sales support content.
- Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.
- Comfortable working directly with customers and cross-functional internal teams.
- Willingness to travel as required to support customer and business needs.
Above and Beyond Qualifications:
- Experience with electric or hybrid-electric aircraft, aviation infrastructure, or advanced air mobility.
- Familiarity with FAA operational and certification frameworks (e.g., Parts 23, 25, 91,135, and 121).
- Pilot, A&P maintainer, or other aviation certifications.
