Sailing Canoe Captain
Primary Responsibilities:
Responsible for following proper safety procedures and safety of all people on the vessel. Must know how to operate, repair, and maintain the vessel, and have knowledge about ocean weather conditions, port procedures, and current maritime laws. Must conduct all activities in accordance with best practices for maximum environmental protection. Provide an exceptional water experience for Mauna Kea guests and Club Members.
Essential Duties:
  • Ensure guest safety and an elevated experience on the water
  • Greet guests in a warm and friendly manner, offer assistance according to resort standards
  • Steer and operate the sailing vessel
  • Oversee the conduct and operation of the vessel, crew members, and guests before, during, and after all vessel activities
  • Dock and undock sailing vessel, navigate through tight spaces
  • Launch and return the vessel in a safe and professional manner, and communicate with beach staff to ensure the safety of all guests
  • Alter navigation plans based on weather conditions to keep vessel and passengers safe
  • Inspect sailing canoe to ensure efficient and safe operation of vessel and equipment and their conformity to regulations
  • Compute positions, set courses, and determine speeds using charts, compasses, area plotting sheets, and knowledge of local conditions
  • Coordinate the activities of crew members to perform necessary tasks
  • Maintain all onboard equipment and keep detailed records of daily activities, personnel reports, ship positions and movements, ports of call, weather conditions, passenger status, and pollution control efforts

Other Duties:
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of the preventative maintenance program for the sailing canoe and all other vessels in the Mauna Kea wa'a fleet
  • Working Conditions:
  • Work outdoors in the sun and other weather conditions
  • Bright reflection of the water
  • May need to enter water in rescue situations, calm or rough ocean conditions

Work Hours:
  • Must be able to work shifts and days determined by the Director of Beach Experience
  • Approximately 18-24hours per week on average, however, additional hours may be required during peak occupancy periods.

Equipment Use:
  • Automated External Defibrillator, Jet Ski, SUP, sailing canoe, outrigger canoe, surfboard, utility cart, ATV or other rescue and beach equipment.
  • Ability to use radio for communication with beach team while on water

Mental and Physical Demands:
  • Must be able to work in the sun and outdoors
  • Must be able to enter the ocean in rescue situations
  • Must be able to respond to emergency situations
  • Must be able to handle stressful situations
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs.

Communication Demands:
  • Must be able to verbally communicate the Ocean Awareness Program and other information to guests
  • Effectively communicate with appropriate resort managers and employees and emergency personnel over the phone, radio or in person
  • Ability to talk story with guests and members to share about the wa'a and Hawaiian cultures and local ecology during sails

Job Skills and Qualifications:
  • Strong interpersonal skills and mediation and negotiation abilities
  • Communicate courteously with different people in various situations
  • Able to easily multi-task
  • Firm knowledge of marine craft communication, signaling and navigation systems
  • Must have 25/50- or 100-ton Master Captain's License (Mariner Learning System)
  • 3+ years' experience in boat handling preferred
  • Ability to maintain a professional, well-groomed appearance per company standards
  • CPR or related first aid certifications required
  • Must be creative, pleasant, smiling and friendly
