Job description

About Us

Advanced Electric Systems (AES) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Quanta Services (NYSE: PWR), the largest utility contractor in North America. We are an electrical testing, maintenance, and repair company that specializes in high-voltage substations.

Based out of Salt Lake City, Utah, AES has completed projects across North America. As our country's electrical infrastructure is rapidly upgraded and expanded, our company's services are in an all-time high demand. Being a Quanta Services company provides us with immense operational bandwidth and allows us to employ the most highly skilled individuals across an array of challenging projects.

AES is an Equal Opportunity Employer and participates in E-Verify.

About this Role

Advanced Electric Systems is looking for motivated individuals to join our team as Apprentice Fiber Technicians. This is an opportunity to build a career in the fiber optic and electrical infrastructure industry while receiving hands-on training and working alongside experienced Fiber Technicians and Journeymen.

The majority of our fiber work involves OPGW (Optical Ground Wire) fiber splicing, installation, and testing on high-voltage transmission infrastructure. As an Apprentice Fiber Technician, you will learn the skills and procedures necessary to safely and properly perform OPGW fiber work while developing your technical abilities in the field.

You will receive on-the-job training in fiber splicing, testing, installation, troubleshooting, fiber documentation, and job-site safety. Apprentices will work under the direction of experienced technicians and progressively take on additional responsibilities as their skills and knowledge develop.

This is a traveling position, and regular travel is an essential requirement of the job. Apprentice Fiber Technicians must be willing and able to travel to various project locations, often outside of their home area, for extended periods of time. The position may require overnight stays, extended project assignments, and travel based on current project needs. Applicants must be willing to travel regularly as a condition of employment.

We are actively hiring in Heber City, Utah and Austin, Texas, while continuing to expand our team to support growing regional demand.

AES is proud to be a Quanta Services company, offering unmatched resources, stability, training, and opportunities for long-term career growth.

  • Performing fiber testing and documenting test results
  • Assisting experienced technicians with troubleshooting and identifying fiber faults
  • Learning proper fiber preparation, splicing, testing, and documentation procedures
  • Maintaining accurate daily logs, splice records, test results, and other project documentation
  • Working closely with Journeyman Fiber Technicians, project managers, engineers, and field crews
  • Following all company safety practices and site-specific safety requirements
  • Learning and following proper procedures when working around high-voltage transmission infrastructure
  • Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work area
  • Traveling regularly to project locations throughout the region and/or across North America
  • Working extended and varying assignments based on project requirements
  • Staying overnight away from home as required by project location and schedule
What You'll BringRequired Qualifications
  • Willingness to learn the fiber optic trade and develop into a skilled Fiber Technician
  • No previous fiber experience required; fiber optic or OPGW experience is a plus
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to work with tools and equipment
  • Ability to learn and follow technical instructions and procedures
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly for work, including overnight and extended project assignments
  • Ability to work outdoors year-round in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work at heights or in confined spaces
  • Ability to work safely around high-voltage transmission infrastructure
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to learn
  • Commitment to safety and following company procedures
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications
