Job description

ย The Recovery Support Specialist (RSS) provides direct care, supervision, and support to clients in Detox, Residential, and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) settings. The RSS promotes recovery through compassionate engagement, observation, andย assistanceย with daily living tasks while ensuring a safe, structured, and therapeutic environment.ย The position involves close collaboration with nursing and clinical teams toย monitorย and report changes in clientย conditions, support treatment goals, andย maintainย compliance with facility and regulatory standards.ย 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESย 
ย 

  • Client Supervision & Safety:ย 

  • Provide consistent supervision of assigned clients toย maintainย safety and therapeutic order.ย 

  • Recognize and respond appropriately to behavioralย changes,ย includingย signs of relapse risk,ย suicidal ideation, or self-harm risks.ย 

  • Utilize Handle with Care techniques and de-escalation strategies when needed.ย 

  • Observation & Documentation:ย 

  • Accurately documentย dailyย observations,ย clientย participationย and progress toward treatment plan goals.ย 

  • Report relevant findings, complaints, or incidents promptly toย RSS Supervisor.ย 

  • Completeย accurateย andย timelyย documentation of client behaviors, progress, and incidentsย in accordance withย program policies and regulatory standards.ย 

  • Utilize standardized formats such as DAP notes and progress notes to reflect individual client participation, clinical observations, and treatment response.ย 

  • Record and communicate all interventions used during group or individual interactions, including de-escalation strategies, coping skill coaching, psychoeducation, and therapeutic engagement.ย 

  • Maintain clear, concise, and legible records in the electronic health record (EHR) ensuring documentation supports continuity of care.ย 

  • Report critical incidents, behavioral changes, or safety concerns to theย appropriate clinicalย supervisor or treatment teamย immediately.ย 

  • Uphold client confidentiality and HIPAA standards in all documentation practices.ย 

  • Support clients in developing and practicingย daily living skillsย that promote independence and long-term recovery (e.g., time management, communication, hygiene, transportation planning).ย 

  • Provideย structure and consistencyย to reinforce healthy routines and adherence to the treatment schedule.ย 

  • Assistย clients withย goal setting,ย accountability, andย tracking progressย toward treatmentย objectives.ย 

  • Offerย reminders and encouragementย to attend scheduled groups, therapy sessions, and medical appointments.ย 

  • Model and encourageย the useย of positive coping strategies, self-soothing techniques, and recovery tools learned in group therapy.ย 

  • Maintain a calm, respectful, and professional demeanor, serving as a recovery role model for clients.ย 

  • Therapeutic Engagement:ย 

  • Participate in andย facilitateย therapeutic and recreational groups or activities.ย 

  • Provide peer support and 1:1ย interactionย to encourage positive coping and recovery behavior.ย 

  • Help orient new clientsย 

  • Communication & Team Collaboration:ย 

  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to ensure continuity of care and safety.ย 

  • Communicate clearly,ย professionally, andย respectfullyย with clients, clinical staff, and administrative personnel to support coordinated care.ย 

  • Useย Microsoft Teamsย for real-time messaging, updates, and coordination with interdisciplinary team members.ย 

  • Monitorย and respond toย Outlook email communicationsย inย a timelyย andย appropriate manner,ย maintainingย a courteous and professional tone.ย 

  • Utilize phone systems appropriately, includingย theย useย ofย codes,ย and ensureย accurateย and immediate communicationย withย relevant staff.ย 

  • Maintain professionalism and empathy inย all forms ofย communication;ย written, verbal, and electronic,ย with both clients and coworkers.ย 

  • Participate in team meetings to ensureย collaborative care planningย and consistency across services.ย 

  • Uphold aย client-centered approachย in all interactions, using language that is supportive,ย empathetic,ย compassionate,ย inclusive, and recovery-focused.ย 

  • Maintain confidentiality and ethical standardsย in accordance withย HIPAA and organizational policies.ย 

  • Recovery Support Specialist (RSS) certificationย requiredย 

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent requiredย 

  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in related field preferredย 

  • CPR/FA Certification โ€“ to be obtained within firstย 30 daysย 

  • Fingerprint Clearance Card โ€“ have current card or show proof of applying within 7 days from hire dateย 

  • Handle with Care โ€“ to be obtained within firstย 30 daysย 

  • Successful clearance of annual MVRย requiredย if applicableย 

  • Successful clearance of pre-employment criminal/county/state background checkย 

  • Successful clearance of pre-employment drug and alcohol testingย 

  • Successful clearance of TB PPD testingย upon hire and annual screening of TB symptomsย 

  • Attending clinical oversight with BHP once every 2 weeks worked for a minimum of 2 sessions per month.ย
