CREATIVITY IS OUR SUPERPOWER. It’s our heritage and it’s also our future. Because we don’t just make toys. We create innovative products and experiences that inspire fans, entertain audiences and develop children through play. Mattel is at its best when every member of our team feels respected, included, and heard—when everyone can show up as themselves and do their best work every day. We value and share an infinite range of ideas and voices that evolve and broaden our perspectives with a reach that extends into all our brands, partners, and suppliers.

Job Description

The Opportunity:

We’re seeking a talented Paralegal to join Mattel’s growing Rights Management team within the Legal and Business Affairs group. Successful candidates will be experienced in entertainment and consumer products rights/intellectual property (IP) management, with the ability to execute end-to-end contract and rights management processes. This position is located at Mattel’s headquarters in Los Angeles.

What Your Impact Will Be:

Rights/IP Management:

  • Develop an expertise in Mattel’s IP portfolio and rights
  • Help manage historic-agreement digitization by identifying, prioritizing, and ingesting agreements into the rights management system
  • Analyze and interpret complex ownership and licensing arrangements with the judgment of when to further escalate inquiries
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to provide guidance on rights inquiries, ensure accurate system records, and facilitate rights collision checks and resolutions
  • Serve as a super user of the rights management system and recommend system enhancements

Team Collaboration:

  • Develop strong cross-functional relationships with key stakeholders across Legal, IT, Finance, Royalty Accounting, and business units utilizing the rights management system.
  • Interface routinely with Mattel’s IP, In-/Out-Licensing, Franchise, Permissions & Promotions, and Digital Games legal teams
  • Help drive user adoption and effective use of the rights management system
Qualifications

What We’re Looking For:

Our ideal candidate will have 2+ years’ experience working in IP or rights management within the media & entertainment and/or consumer products industry, as well as the following attributes:

  • Knowledge of IP law
  • Hands-on experience with market leading enterprise rights management platforms (RightsLogic preferred), including complex, multi-dimensional rights modeling (e.g., rights, territory, channel, language, product/category) supporting IP licensing and commercialization
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Tech-savvy; proficient in Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and other tools such as Tableau and Power BI
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and deliver results in a timely manner
  • Self-starter who works independently but knows when to elevate issues and seek advice from colleagues
  • Attention to detail in all areas, particularly as to contract review and analysis

Our ideal candidate will also:

  1. Partner to Supervisors and Clients. Cultivate the trust and confidence of, and be an effective partner to, the candidate’s supervisors and clients.
  2. Balanced Approach. Provide strategic advice that’s appropriately risk-balanced. Provide advice with risks and the long-term in mind, but without losing sight of the imperative to advance Mattel’s business – often with challenging deadlines.
  3. Strategic Thinker. Identify issues and notify relevant Mattel stakeholders early – and then creatively present solutions to those issues in constructive consultation with those stakeholders.
  4. Demonstrate Values. Excel in a culture that fosters and demands accountability, speed, trust, and ethical conduct. Work effectively within a talented, high-performing team in far-flung time zones around the world. Kindness and respectfulness are essential.
  5. Curiosity and Growth. Be intellectually curious and eager to grow and develop. Be humble; recognize a continuing need to “learn on the job”; be receptive to constructive feedback; and elevate issues that are beyond one’s knowledge or comfort zone.
  6. Engaged Practice Management. Proactively manage expectations of clients, business partners, and staff. Also proactively manage team, administrative functions, and issues across offices, time zones, and sub-practice areas. Skillfully juggle constantly changing priorities and sometimes conflicting objectives.
  7. Excellent Work Product and Work Ethic. Write and present in a concise, audience-appropriate, and lucid manner – in emails, memos, and presentations.

*The pay range is indicative of projected hiring range, however base pay will be determined based on a candidate’s work location, skills and experience. Mattel offers competitive total pay programs, comprehensive benefits, and resources to help empower a culture where every employee can reach their full potential.
