Job description

The Clerk Typist performs various typing and clerical tasks, files records and reports, and performs general office work.


  • Types correspondence, reports, forms, cards, requisitions, and other related documents.
  • Operates office equipment, including photocopiers, postage meters, and adding machines.
  • Maintains control of documents that originate within or pass through the department through effective logging, posting, filing, and recordkeeping processes.
  • Searches files and records to retrieve correspondence, reports, and other documents as needed.
  • Answers telephone calls and takes messages.
  • Receives, sorts, and distributes incoming mail.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Education
  • High School diploma, commercial school graduate, or GED equivalent with coursework in typing and English required.
Preferred Experience
  • Six (6) months to one (1) year of clerical or administrative experience preferred.
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
  • Ability to accurately type a minimum of 45 words per minute (WPM).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel spreadsheet analysis and Microsoft Word.
  • Ability to prioritize work and collaborate closely with Materials Management staff and departmental requesters to troubleshoot issues involving Lawson.
  • Working knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Clerical experience or on-the-job training in posting, filing, and records maintenance methods.
  • Clerical aptitude necessary to proofread documents and avoid transposition and other administrative errors.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
