Their responsibilities typically include installing and updating VMware products, monitoring virtual machines, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring system security and performance. By working remotely, they use secure connections and management tools to maintain infrastructure for businesses without being physically present at the site. This role is essential for organizations that rely on virtualization for scalability, disaster recovery, and efficient resource utilization.

Is sysadmin an entry level job?

A systems administrator role, including a VMware systems administrator, is typically not considered entry level, as it requires technical skills, experience with server management, and knowledge of virtualization tools. Entry-level positions may exist in related IT support roles, but advanced sysadmin jobs usually demand several years of experience or relevant certifications like VMware Certified Professional (VCP).

What are some common challenges faced by Remote VMware Systems Administrators, and how can they be addressed?

Remote VMware Systems Administrators often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting issues without physical access to hardware, managing multiple virtual environments across different locations, and ensuring robust security for remote connections. These challenges can be addressed by utilizing advanced remote management tools, establishing clear documentation and procedures, and maintaining proactive communication with on-site teams. Staying updated on VMware best practices and security protocols also helps in efficiently resolving issues and minimizing downtime.

Job description

Senior IFS Cloud Systems Administrator
Location: Remote, U.S. (Eastern Time Zone Preferred)

  • Employment Type: Full-Time
  • Compensation: $155,000 - $175,000 base salary (depending on experience) + bonus eligibility + comprehensive benefits

ABOUT US:

  • We are one of the top ERP firms specializing in IFS and JD Edwards, delivering consulting, implementation, and managed services. As an IFS Premier Partner with more than 40 years in ERP and consultants averaging over 20 years of hands-on experience, we keep customers' systems running with 24/7 monitoring, updates, and technical support, including ITAR-compliant U.S. support for regulated environments
  • We are hiring a Senior IFS Systems Administrator to own the technical operations of our IFS managed services practice: keeping customers' IFS environments healthy, leading the response when something breaks, and serving as the senior technical lead across the IFS book. It is a hands-on, player-coach role weighted toward hands-on work, with technical leadership and coordination as a meaningful part of the job, built on deep IFS systems and infrastructure administration. Internally, we call this the Technical Delivery Lead, which reflects its leadership scope
  • ERP technical work splits into functional, development, and systems administration. This role is the third: the technical stack IFS runs on, spanning both the infrastructure layer (servers, database, containers, middleware, and integrations) and the IFS application-technical layer (the Lifecycle Experience and Build Place, deliveries and updates, configuration, and application administration). It is not a functional or developer role. You deploy, administer, and stabilize the configurations and customizations that functional consultants and developers build, rather than authoring them yourself. If your background covers IFS infrastructure and the IFS application stack from a technical lens, this role is built for you

Eligibility:

  • This role supports environments subject to ITAR, so it requires eligibility to access ITAR-controlled technical data. Candidates must be U.S. persons as defined under ITAR, which includes U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents (green card holders). This status must be held at the time of hire.

Location and Hours:

  • Remote and U.S.-based
  • Eastern time zone strongly preferred to align with our support coverage
  • Other U.S. time zones are considered for the right person, with Eastern coverage as the anchor

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Operate and maintain IFS Cloud environments in the remote deployment (self-managed) model as well as IFS-hosted environments, including the middle-tier Kubernetes cluster (MicroK8s on Linux) and the database and management servers
  • Administer the Oracle databases behind IFS: backups and restores (RMAN), disaster recovery planning, refreshes, performance, and space management
  • Manage the IFS Lifecycle Experience and Build Place: apply service updates and releases, build and deploy deliveries through to production, handle environment refreshes and cloning across DEV, TEST, UAT, and production, and run the sanity and impact testing that keeps environments stable
  • Administer the IFS application layer: configuration and customization deployment, the security model (roles, permission sets, segregation of duties, and audit compliance), and Aurena and Lobby configuration
  • Work alongside developers and functional consultants, taking the customizations and configuration they build safely from the Build Place through to production
  • Manage SSL/TLS certificates and licenses ahead of expiration
  • Monitor environment health through infrastructure monitoring and native IFS logging, and resolve issues before they escalate
  • Lead P1 and P2 critical incidents and war rooms, troubleshooting to resolution and coordinating with customer SMEs and vendors
  • Conduct root-cause analysis and implement prevention actions
  • Own technical onboarding and transitions of new customers into managed services
  • Maintain integrations and APIs (IFS Connect, REST and SOAP, XML/JSON) and administer security, roles, and access including federated authentication
  • Drive automation that reduces manual effort, and author runbooks and knowledge-based articles
  • Participate in the after-hours on-call rotation for critical incidents

We are looking for a seasoned IFS systems administrator with the full breadth of the platform behind them: implementations, upgrades, migrations, and steady-state run support. The emphasis for this role is run support, which is the core of the day to day. Work runs through a ticketing system and centers on keeping environments stable, patched, and healthy and resolving issues as they arise.
WHAT THE ROLE REQUIRES:
IFS Cloud Remote Deployment (Self-Managed)

  • Hands-on experience operating IFS Cloud in the remote deployment model that customers run themselves, including the MicroK8s middle tier on Linux, not solely the IFS-hosted managed cloud

Oracle Database Administration

  • Strong Oracle DBA depth: RMAN, refreshes, backups, and performance. Oracle is the database behind IFS

Linux and Windows Server Administration

  • Solid command of both server platforms across the application stack

IFS Lifecycle Experience and Build Place

  • Hands-on with the IFS Cloud lifecycle: managing the customer solution in the Build Place, applying service updates and releases, creating and deploying deliveries through to the Use Place environments (development, UAT, production), and running sanity and impact testing

IFS Application Administration

  • Configuration and customization deployment, the application security and permission model, Aurena and Lobby configuration, and scheduled and background job administration

Certificate and License Management

  • SSL/TLS renewal and license handling in production

Monitoring and Logging

  • Infrastructure and application monitoring, with the judgment to recognize a healthy environment

Incident Leadership

  • A track record of leading major incidents to resolution and producing clear root-cause analysis

EXPERIENCE:

  • At least 8+ years in enterprise systems and infrastructure administration, including hands-on production Kubernetes (any platform) and direct experience operating IFS Cloud in the remote, self-managed deployment model

Strongly Preferred:

  • IFS Connect framework and integration work
  • Web services (REST, SOAP) and XML/JSON message handling
  • IFS identity and access management and federated authentication troubleshooting (Active Directory, Okta)
  • SQL and PL/SQL scripting
  • Exposure to IFS Applications 9/10: three-tier architecture, IFS Connect / MWS, and modification and build management
  • Relevant certifications, as a plus rather than a requirement: IFS Certified Practitioner - Technician (IFS Cloud) | Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) | Cloud or security certifications (OCI, Azure, AWS, CompTIA Security+)

PLATFORMS AND VERSIONS:

  • Our IFS work spans IFS Cloud (current release families), both self-managed and IFS-hosted, and IFS Applications 9/10. Breadth across both the modern Cloud stack and the Applications middleware is a real advantage

GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT:

  • As an IFS Premier Partner, we give this role broad technical exposure across modern IFS Cloud and IFS Applications environments and a range of industries, plus real ownership of automation and technical standards. We support relevant certifications (security, cloud platforms, and IFS Academy) and offer clear paths forward, whether toward deeper technical expertise, architecture and solutions work, or leadership

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE:

  • Someone customers trust for technical expertise and reliable execution, who owns technical problems end to end, and who partners well across disciplines, working alongside developers and functional consultants and coordinating with service delivery leads to deliver. You thrive in a collaborative, team-first environment, you raise the technical bar for the people around you, and you balance hands-on delivery with lifting the team, with the weight on hands-on.

Equal Opportunity Employer: We are an equal opportunity employer. We consider all qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. Eligibility for this role is also subject to U.S. export control laws; any citizenship or immigration-status information we collect is used solely to determine compliance with those laws.
