What is remote travel procurement?

Remote travel procurement refers to the process of sourcing, negotiating, and managing travel services and arrangements for a company or organization, all performed remotely rather than from a traditional office setting. Professionals in this role handle tasks such as booking flights, hotels, and transportation, managing travel policies, and ensuring cost-effectiveness and compliance with company guidelines. The use of digital tools and communication platforms enables remote travel procurement specialists to collaborate with travel vendors and internal teams from anywhere in the world.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote travel procurement specialist, and why are they important?

To excel as a Remote Travel Procurement Specialist, you need expertise in vendor negotiation, contract management, and travel industry knowledge, often supported by a degree in business or hospitality management. Familiarity with procurement software, global distribution systems (GDS), and travel management platforms is typically required. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for optimizing travel spend and managing relationships remotely. These competencies are essential to ensure cost-effective, efficient travel solutions that align with organizational goals.

How does a remote travel procurement professional typically collaborate with internal teams and external vendors?

Remote Travel Procurement professionals work closely with internal departments such as finance, HR, and operations to understand travel needs, establish budgets, and ensure compliance with company policies. Externally, they negotiate with travel vendors like airlines, hotels, and car rental agencies to secure favorable terms and rates. Effective communication and relationship management are crucial, as much of the coordination happens virtually. Regular meetings, clear documentation, and strong negotiation skills help ensure seamless travel arrangements for employees and cost savings for the organization.

Location: C incinnati Or Remote
Travel Requirements: Less than 25%
Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Director of Procurement to build and lead the procurement function from the ground up. This role will establish organization-wide procurement policies, processes, and governance; lead a small team responsible for sourcing and contract administration; and assess and implement modern procurement technology to improve efficiency and visibility. The ideal candidate can set strategy and direction while staying hands-on as the team and function are established.
What You'll Do
Procurement Strategy & Governance
  • Design, implement, educate, and enforce company-wide procurement policies, approval workflows, and spend controls.
  • Define and manage procurement KPIs (cost savings, cycle time, compliance rate) for the function.
  • Partner with Legal and Finance to align procurement practices with contract management (LinkSquares) and financial systems (NetSuite)
  • Build a vendor management program and drive overall sourcing strategy.

Team Leadership
  • Create and manage a small team with potential for growth as the function matures.
  • Set priorities, workload, and quality standards for sourcing events and contract management activities.
  • Provide coaching and escalation support on complex negotiations, high-risk vendors, and contract disputes.
  • Review and approve significant RFPs, sourcing recommendations, and contract terms above defined thresholds.

Cross-Functional Enforcement
  • Drive adoption of procurement policies across departments, ensuring purchases and contracts follow approved workflows.
  • Serve as the primary escalation point for procurement exceptions and policy conflicts.
  • Train department heads and budget owners on procurement processes and system usage
  • Monitor and report on maverick/off contract spend, working to bring it into compliance.

Technology & Process Improvement
  • Evaluate, recommend, and implement procurement software platforms (e.g., P2P/source-to-pay tools) that integrate with LinkSquares and NetSuite
  • Own the procurement tech stack roadmap, including automation of requisitions, purchase orders, approvals, and vendor management.
  • Manage relationships with procurement software vendors, including implementation and ongoing optimization.

Vendor & Contract Oversight
  • Set overall contract management strategy and standards executed within LinkSquares CLM
  • Oversee sourcing strategy and major RFx events led by the RFx/Sourcing Manager
  • Personally lead or co-lead the most strategic/high-value vendor negotiations and relationships.

Reporting & Analytics
  • Develop dashboards and report on procurement spending, savings, and compliance for executive leadership.
  • Ensure procurement data integrity and accurate spend categorization within NetSuite.

What We Need
  • 10+ years of progressive procurement, sourcing, or supply chain experience
  • 3+ years in a leadership/people-management role.
  • Proven record of building procurement functions or programs from scratch and managing/owning such function through scaled growth.
  • Experience implementing or managing procurement/P2P software platforms.
  • Strong negotiation, vendor management, and stakeholder management skills
  • Ability to influence and drive process adoption across departments without direct authority.
  • Excellent analytical skills with experience building spend reporting and dashboards.

Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in business, Supply Chain, Engineering, Finance, or related field (MBA a plus)
  • Firsthand experience with NetSuite
  • Experience with LinkSquares or other CLM tools strongly preferred.

What Success Looks Like in the First Year
  • Team hired/onboarded (RFx/Sourcing Manager and Contract Manager), with clear roles, workflows, and KPIs in place.
  • Procurement policy and approval workflow implemented and adopted company wide.
  • Recommendation (and ideally implementation) of a procurement platform integrated with NetSuite and LinkSquares
  • Measurable reduction in off contract/maverick spending.
  • Established reporting cadence on procurement spending and savings for leadership.

What You'll Need to Succeed
  • Builder mindset with the ability to establish and scale a procurement function.
  • Strong leadership skills with a hands-on, collaborative approach.
  • Ability to influence stakeholders and drive adoption of new processes.
  • Strategic and analytical mindset with strong business judgment.
  • Ability to balance competing priorities in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
