About the Role
The BI / Reporting Engineer works under the direction of the BI / Reporting Lead to build and validate the platform's reporting semantic layer and dashboard outputs. This role focuses on hands-on implementation by translating report specifications into production-ready SQL views, aggregations, and report builds, while working closely with offshore BI Engineers and validating all outputs against ERP source data before stakeholder review.
This role is work-from-home (remote) though must be able to commute to client offices in Falls Church, VA as needed (estimated every 2 weeks). This is a full-time W2 employment position with full benefits. Please note that the role is tied to a client contract and is structured as an initial 9-month position. Opportunities for extension or long-term placement are highly likely based on client renewal and project performance.
Responsibilities
As the BI / Reporting Engineer, you will be responsible for hands-on reporting execution, semantic layer builds, and data validation. Your primary duties include:
  • Semantic Layer & Data Modeling: Build and maintain Azure SQL reporting views, aggregations, and semantic layer structures under the direction of the BI / Reporting Lead. Implement star schema dimensional models within the enterprise reporting platform (Azure Synapse Analytics, Microsoft Fabric, or Databricks).
  • Report & Dashboard Implementation: Translate documented business requirements and report specifications into production-ready report and dashboard outputs.
  • Data Validation & Quality Assurance: Validate report outputs against ERP source data, reconciling figures line-by-line to confirm accuracy before stakeholder review.
  • Offshore Coordination: Coordinate with and review work from offshore BI Engineers by providing guidance, feedback, and ensuring consistent implementation quality across deliverables.
  • Stakeholder Support & UAT: Support report UAT sessions by working directly with business users to validate outputs, capture feedback, and resolve discrepancies. Support post-launch dashboard enhancements during hypercare.
  • CI/CD & Pipeline Standards: Work within Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines, ensuring all reporting code and schema changes pass review before deployment.

Required Skills & Experience
  • 4-7 years of BI or data engineering experience, with a focused background in hands-on reporting and analytics delivery.
  • Strong SQL skills, including complex query writing, view design, aggregation logic, and performance tuning on Azure SQL or Synapse Analytics for large enterprise datasets.
  • Experience implementing semantic layers, reporting data models, and dimensional modeling concepts (star schemas, fact/dimension tables) on Azure SQL or Azure Synapse Analytics.
  • Experience preparing reporting datasets from operational systems using SQL-based transformation techniques.
  • Experience working with data visualization and BI tools (e.g., Apache ECharts, Tableau, Power BI, Sigma, or similar Azure-native/compatible tools).
  • Proven experience validating report outputs against source system data for detailed reconciliation.
  • Comfortable working within CI/CD pipelines and version-controlled SQL schema management (Azure DevOps preferred).
  • Experience using AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot) to assist with query generation, data modeling, and report specification implementation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to participate in UAT sessions with business stakeholders and collaborate effectively with offshore teams.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience building reporting layers on top of Oracle Fusion Cloud data (PPM, Financials, SCM, HCM).
  • Familiarity with lakehouse or medallion architecture patterns (Bronze/Silver/Gold/Semantic layers).
  • Experience with Apache ECharts embedded in React applications.
  • Experience delivering financial reporting for construction, real estate, or project-based industries.
