About the Role
Who We Are:
Are you a purpose-driven leader who believes technology can be a powerful catalyst for social change? You've come to the right place. At Bonterra, our purpose is to power those who power social impact. To that end, we serve the people who make social good possible-the doers behind the scenes across nonprofits, public agencies, corporations, philanthropic organizations, and foundations.
As the second-largest and fastest-growing social good software company in the world, Bonterra brings together leading solutions from Strategic Philanthropy, Fundraising & Engagement, and Impact Management and their respective entities. By bringing our intuitive technology and expertise together, Bonterra will enable unprecedented connectivity between social good organizations and their community of supporters and constituents. This will reshape philanthropic giving, empower digital transformation, and bring the social good sector the technology it needs to accelerate lasting social change.
Who You Are:
Are you a strategic engineering leader who has built high-performing organizations from the ground up? Do you thrive at the intersection of technology and product-owning a roadmap and the engineering organization behind it? Are you ready to build the team that will power Bonterra's corporate and workplace giving at enterprise scale?
At Bonterra, we're looking for a Director of Engineering to lead our Corporate Giving domain. This domain spans employee and workplace giving (Deed), Bonterra Grants, corporate disbursements, and the systems that support hundreds of enterprise clients. You'll build and shape the domain's engineering organization, own the product roadmap for Deed, and lead the migration from our legacy disbursement platform to a modern standalone disbursement service-all while ensuring SOC 2 compliance posture and delivering for the enterprise clients who depend on these systems every day.
This is not a steady-state delivery role. You'll be building an organization, making foundational architectural decisions, and partnering directly with product and enterprise clients on a roadmap that supports $500M+ in annual disbursements.
What You Will Do:
People & Organization
  • Build and lead the Corporate Giving engineering organization, scaling from an early-stage team to a fully staffed, high-performing domain
  • Recruit, develop, and retain engineering talent across IC levels; build management depth as the domain grows
  • Coach engineers and leads on spec-driven development and AI-assisted delivery practices; hold the organization accountable for applying them consistently
  • Foster a culture of ownership, quality, and continuous improvement
  • Contribute directly to technical work-architecture reviews, design decisions, and hands-on engagement with the codebase at a minimum of 25% of your time

Technical Direction & Product
  • Own the technical direction for Corporate Giving: Deed, Bonterra Grants, the legacy disbursement platform, and the new standalone disbursement service
  • Own Deed's product roadmap in partnership with Product leadership-not just engineering delivery, but the product vision and prioritization for employee and workplace giving
  • Lead the migration from the legacy disbursement platform to the new standalone disbursement service, ensuring continuity for enterprise clients throughout
  • Ensure systems meet SOC 2 compliance requirements; work with InfoSec and GRC on ongoing compliance posture and audit readiness
  • Maintain the technical depth needed to evaluate architectural decisions, set credible non-functional requirements, and earn the confidence of senior engineers

Delivery & Operations
  • Own delivery outcomes across the domain: set clear goals, establish metrics, and ensure commitments are met
  • Coordinate inter-team dependencies with Online Contribution & Forms and Payments Platform
  • Anticipate and remove process friction at organizational scale-structural bottlenecks, dependency issues, and workflow inefficiencies that constrain delivery

Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with Product, Customer Success, and enterprise clients on Corporate Giving roadmap direction and prioritization
  • Work with InfoSec on access controls, SOC 2 requirements, and audit preparation
  • Collaborate with the VP of Engineering and peer Directors on org-wide engineering standards and delivery model evolution

Requirements:
  • 12+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 5+ years in engineering leadership, with demonstrated experience at Director level or equivalent
  • Track record of building and scaling multi-team engineering organizations-not just managing a team, but growing one from early-stage
  • Experience owning or co-owning a product roadmap alongside product leadership
  • Deep technical credibility: able to evaluate architectural decisions, set credible non-functional requirements, and challenge technical proposals meaningfully
  • Familiarity with TypeScript/Node.js and AWS serverless infrastructure; comfortable evaluating modern cloud-native architectures
  • Experience with compliance programs at scale (SOC 2, PCI-DSS, or equivalent)
  • AI-first mindset: actively uses AI coding tools, champions spec-driven development, and coaches engineers to work effectively with AI-generated output
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently with enterprise clients, senior leadership, and ICs
  • Passion for empowering the social good sector through technology

Nice to Have:
  • Experience with employee giving, workplace giving, grant management, or disbursement processing
  • Experience leading platform modernization - moving a production system forward while keeping it stable and compliant
  • Background in mission-driven, nonprofit, or social impact technology

What You Can Expect:
You can expect growth and innovation and to have fun along the way. You will not only be rewarded for your personal achievements, but you will also have the opportunity to be part of an organization that lives by its motto every day: Powering those who power social impact!
Our team is made up of industry experts and advocates who are 100% committed to supporting the doers of social good. We are currently undergoing an effort to create the vision and values that embody our collective organization and embrace the individuals who make up our community.
At Bonterra, we're building AI-powered tools to solve real human challenges-and we want teammates who share that enthusiasm. We value people who will champion AI and bring diverse perspectives from different industries, backgrounds, and cultures. Together, we create AI that breaks down barriers, empowers communities, and delivers better outcomes
At this time, we are unable to consider candidates who require current or future sponsorship for employment authorization.
Our Culture
At Bonterra, we're innovating with a higher purpose: to increase giving to 3% of US GDP by 2033, creating $573 billion more in global impact every year. At Bonterra, we foster an inclusive, equitable culture where every team member belongs and contributes to meaningful impact. Read more about our values and culture here.
Compensation & Benefits
We offer a comprehensive benefits package that supports your health, well-being and growth - explore full details here.

We provide equal employment opportunities without regard to race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, or gender identity), national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
