How much do remote structural engineering research jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 11, 2026, the average hourly pay for remote structural engineering research in the United States is $65.13, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $54.81 and $76.20 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by remote structural engineering researchers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote structural engineering researchers often encounter challenges related to effective communication and collaboration with team members, especially when working across different time zones. Accessing specialized software or large datasets can also be a hurdle due to varying hardware capabilities or internet connectivity. To overcome these, it's important to establish clear communication protocols, schedule regular virtual meetings, and utilize cloud-based platforms for sharing resources and conducting simulations. Proactively reaching out for feedback and participating in online research forums can also help maintain a sense of connection and support.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Structural Engineering Researcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Structural Engineering Researcher, you need an advanced degree in structural or civil engineering, strong analytical skills, and a solid understanding of mechanics and materials. Proficiency in structural analysis software (such as SAP2000, ANSYS, or ABAQUS), programming languages like MATLAB or Python, and familiarity with research methodologies are essential. Exceptional written communication, self-motivation, and problem-solving abilities distinguish top performers in remote research roles. These skills ensure rigorous, innovative, and reliable research outcomes while facilitating effective collaboration and independent work in a remote setting.

What is remote structural engineering research?

Remote structural engineering research involves conducting studies and analyses related to the design, analysis, and behavior of structures, but from a location outside of a traditional laboratory or office—often from home or another remote setting. This work typically uses digital tools, software simulations, and remote collaboration to investigate structural systems, materials, and methods. Researchers may focus on topics such as structural safety, innovative materials, building codes, and disaster resilience. Remote roles often require strong skills in computational modeling, data analysis, and virtual communication.

What is the difference between Remote Structural Engineering Research vs Remote Civil Engineering Design?

AspectRemote Structural Engineering ResearchRemote Civil Engineering Design
CredentialsEngineering degree, structural engineering certificationsEngineering degree, civil engineering licenses
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, academic institutions, remote collaborationDesign firms, consulting companies, remote project sites
Industry UsageAcademic research, structural analysis, material testingProject planning, infrastructure design, site development

Remote Structural Engineering Research focuses on analyzing and testing structural systems, often within academic or research settings, requiring specialized certifications. In contrast, Remote Civil Engineering Design involves creating infrastructure plans and designs, typically for construction projects. Both roles may be performed remotely but serve different industry needs and require distinct skill sets.

Job description

STRUCTURAL TECHNOLOGIESdevelops and integrates products, engineering support, repair and maintenance services to provide value-added solutions to owners, engineers and contractors.We provide specialty contracting services through our contracting companies, and state-of-the-art proprietary products and engineering support services through our technologies company. With over 2,500 employees working fromlocations nationwide and in select international markets, we serve the Commercial, Public, Transportation Industrial, and Power markets to tackle the toughest construction challenges. STRUCTURAL TECHNOLOGIES is the in-house engineering business line of Structural Group.

Join Our Team as a Structural Engineer!

STRUCTURAL TECHNOLOGIES is seeking motivated earlycareer engineers to join our nationwide assessment and repair engineering division. Opportunities are available in our Chicago, Columbia, and Houston offices, with remote options in the Charlotte or Chattanooga areas for qualified candidates. This hybrid role combines intentional inperson collaboration with workfromhome flexibility, offering a challenging and rewarding start to your structural engineering career.

As the largest concrete specialty repair contractor in the United States, the STRUCTURAL TECHNOLOGIES group delivers investigatedesignbuild solutions primarily for nuclear, power generation, and industrial clients. Our teams develop innovative repair strategies, integrated products, and engineering support to extend the life and performance of critical infrastructure. Engineers here don't just design - they see their solutions built, tested, and relied on in live operating facilities across the country.

In this role, you'll apply and expand your engineering skills while shaping a career path aligned with your interests. We're looking for engineers who want to understand why structures fail - not just design them - and who are eager to be accountable for realworld performance. Supported by experienced mentors, you'll gain handson exposure across engineering and construction disciplines, including:

  • Gain exposure to structural failure mechanisms;
  • Evaluate distressed structures and determine root cause;
  • Decide when repair vs. replacement is appropriate;
  • Design repairs that must be constructible, durable, and safe in live Nuclear or industrial facilities
  • Work side by side with construction teams-not just hand off drawings.

This position offers future career progression to both our business leadership and technical leadership pathways in engineering.

Skills and Qualifications:

We are looking for candidates who meet the following criteria:

Education, Certification, and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering
  • Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam is mandatory
  • Professional registration is preferred
  • 3 - 6 years of experience

Technical Skills

  • Solid understanding of how structures behave
  • Working knowledge of Finite Element Analysis software such as SAP2000, RISA3D, or STAAD
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, or other drafting/BIM software

Soft Skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Enthusiasm and curiosity for solving problems and understanding how things work
  • Excellent documentation and organizational abilities

Field Work

  • Ability to travel and work in the field, both locally and outside the local area
  • Capability to enter secure facilities (e.g., Nuclear and Industrial plants).
  • Strong focus on working safely in a variety of challenging environments
