Job description

The Structural Engineer IV serves as a senior-level technical leader, providing advanced structural design expertise and project oversight across a wide variety of industries and project types. This role requires the ability to adapt quickly to diverse engineering challenges, manage fast-paced project turnarounds, and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
In this position, you will lead the structural design process from concept through construction, applying advanced engineering principles to ensure safe, efficient, and innovative solutions. Typical responsibilities include conducting detailed field inspections, preparing comprehensive technical reports and documentation, performing complex structural design and analysis, and developing design calculations to support engineering decisions. You will also provide construction engineering support for contractors in the field, ensuring that design intent is met during project execution.
This role is highly collaborative, supporting a broad range of projects within our Power, Gas, and Aviation groups, while also engaging with internal teams and external stakeholders to deliver high-quality structural solutions. The Structural Engineer IV is expected to mentor junior engineers, contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, and uphold the highest standards of safety, quality, and technical excellence.
What you will do:
  • Lead the project design team, providing mentoring and technical oversight of team members
  • Manage the project scope, schedule, and budget, and communicate with the client and other stakeholders
  • Perform analyses on projects of all levels of complexity using hand calculations, structural analysis software, and other accepted methods
  • Identify and resolve problems that arise during the course of a project
  • Employ critical thinking to find creative, efficient solutions that meet the client's needs
  • Review requests for engineering services to determine that adequate information is provided to complete service
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and design staff
  • Review building/bridge structures and foundations for existing and proposed uses
  • Review Quality Assurance (QA) and final review on structural analysis reports
  • Support Client Engagement and business development
  • Keep abreast of new technical methods and development related to structural engineering
  • Ensure accurate project status reporting to facilitate accurate customer and sales reporting

Who you are:
  • Requires a bachelor's degree in civil or Structural Engineering
  • 9-12 years of structural engineering design experience
  • Structural Engineer in Illinois or Professional Engineer in other states
  • Structural engineering design experience of the type required for low to mid-rise new construction, adaptive reuse projects, and addition/renovations
  • Preference for candidates with mass timber and/or embodied carbon experience
  • Knowledge including, but not limited to, the following software systems: Revit, ETABS, Tedds, RISA, and MathCAD
  • Experienced in project management and technical analysis
  • Strong oral and verbal communication skills
