What are Structural Engineer IVs?

A Structural Engineer IV is a senior-level structural engineer who is responsible for designing, analyzing, and overseeing the construction of buildings, bridges, and other structures. They typically manage complex projects, supervise junior engineers, ensure compliance with building codes, and coordinate with architects and contractors. Structural Engineer IVs often have several years of experience and may hold professional engineering licenses, allowing them to sign off on major projects and make critical decisions regarding structural integrity and safety.

How does a Structural Engineer IV typically collaborate with other disciplines during large-scale projects?

As a Structural Engineer IV, you will often serve as a senior technical resource, working closely with architects, civil engineers, and construction managers to ensure structural integrity and compliance with design requirements. Regular coordination meetings and interdisciplinary reviews are common, where you'll provide guidance on complex structural issues, resolve conflicts, and integrate feedback from various teams. Your role also involves mentoring junior engineers and ensuring that project milestones are met efficiently and safely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Structural Engineer IV, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Engineer IV, you need advanced knowledge of structural analysis and design, a bachelor’s or master’s degree in civil or structural engineering, and a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Proficiency with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, Revit, SAP2000, and ETABS, as well as familiarity with building codes and standards, is typically required. Leadership, project management, and effective communication skills help distinguish top performers in this senior role. These competencies are vital to ensure the safe, efficient completion of complex projects and to guide teams in delivering high-quality solutions.

What is the difference between Structural Engineer IV vs Structural Engineer III?

AspectStructural Engineer IVStructural Engineer III
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, PE license often preferred, several years of experienceBachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, PE license optional, moderate experience
Work EnvironmentDesign, analysis, project management, often leading small teamsDesign, analysis, supporting project tasks, collaborating with senior engineers

Job description

Job Description
In the Structural Engineer / Stress Analyst position you will work in a fast-paced environment and perform structural analysis using hand calculations and finite element analysis (FEA) on a wide variety of highly loaded subsea structure such as remotely operated vehicle (ROV) frames, mechanisms, pressure vessels, ship over-boarding equipment, and advanced development projects. You will work with designer engineers from a program's initial stages through structural testing and completion, influence load path, and ensure structural integrity. The work spans static and dynamic studies, performing linear and non-linear structural analysis including transient shock, fatigue and fracture, bolt and weld analysis, defining load tests, DDAM, and documentation.
Applicant must be a US citizen and have the capability to obtain a security clearance. Applicants with Top Secret/SCI with CI poly are preferred.
Responsibilities
  • Develop load cases and quantify loads for primary and secondary structures.
  • Perform initial sizing of conceptual structure.
  • Perform static analysis using industry standard methods (Bruhn, Roark, Shigley).
  • Perform stress analysis by developing, solving, and post processing large FEA models using ANSYS.
  • Possess an understanding of converting complex systems into simplified FEA.
  • Participate in design reviews.
  • Properly document analysis.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program. Bachelor's degree is preferred; however, years of experience will be considered in lieu of degree.
  • 15+ years of experience in stress analysis.
  • Proficient in standard industry analytical methods (FEA and classical hand analysis).
  • Proficiency in ANSYS, NASTRAN, or similar. ANSYS is preferred.
  • Basic proficiency in 3D CAD platform, preferably SolidWorks.
  • Familiar with a variety of analyses including static, dynamic, loads, nonlinear contact, stability, vibration, frequency response, transient shock, DDAM, bolt analysis, weld analysis, fatigue, fracture, structural optimization, and pressure vessel analysis.
  • Organizational skills and ability to prioritize daily activities to meet department objectives.
  • Very good written communication skills, including the ability to read, write, and understand technical requirements and reports.

Must be able to obtain a security clearance.
We offer a comprehensive and competitive benefits package. Employee benefits vary by role, however, may include Health and Wellness, Mental Health, Retirement Savings, Life and Disability, Paid Maternity and Parental Leave, Paid Time Off, Tuition Reimbursement, and an Employee Assistance Program.
Compensation $109,800.00 - $164,600.00
