Remote Structural Engineering Research information

What is remote structural engineering research?

Remote structural engineering research involves conducting studies and analyses related to the design, analysis, and behavior of structures, but from a location outside of a traditional laboratory or office—often from home or another remote setting. This work typically uses digital tools, software simulations, and remote collaboration to investigate structural systems, materials, and methods. Researchers may focus on topics such as structural safety, innovative materials, building codes, and disaster resilience. Remote roles often require strong skills in computational modeling, data analysis, and virtual communication.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote structural engineering researcher?

To thrive as a Remote Structural Engineering Researcher, you need an advanced degree in structural or civil engineering, strong analytical skills, and a solid understanding of mechanics and materials. Proficiency in structural analysis software (such as SAP2000, ANSYS, or ABAQUS), programming languages like MATLAB or Python, and familiarity with research methodologies are essential. Exceptional written communication, self-motivation, and problem-solving abilities distinguish top performers in remote research roles. These skills ensure rigorous, innovative, and reliable research outcomes while facilitating effective collaboration and independent work in a remote setting.

What are some common challenges faced by remote structural engineering researchers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote structural engineering researchers often encounter challenges related to effective communication and collaboration with team members, especially when working across different time zones. Accessing specialized software or large datasets can also be a hurdle due to varying hardware capabilities or internet connectivity. To overcome these, it's important to establish clear communication protocols, schedule regular virtual meetings, and utilize cloud-based platforms for sharing resources and conducting simulations. Proactively reaching out for feedback and participating in online research forums can also help maintain a sense of connection and support.

What is the difference between Remote Structural Engineering Research vs Remote Civil Engineering Design?

AspectRemote Structural Engineering ResearchRemote Civil Engineering Design
CredentialsEngineering degree, structural engineering certificationsEngineering degree, civil engineering licenses
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, academic institutions, remote collaborationDesign firms, consulting companies, remote project sites
Industry UsageAcademic research, structural analysis, material testingProject planning, infrastructure design, site development

Remote Structural Engineering Research focuses on analyzing and testing structural systems, often within academic or research settings, requiring specialized certifications. In contrast, Remote Civil Engineering Design involves creating infrastructure plans and designs, typically for construction projects. Both roles may be performed remotely but serve different industry needs and require distinct skill sets.

Job description

Structural Engineer
Location: Conyers, GA / Charleston, SC / Charlottesville, VA / Greenville, SC / Orlando, FL / Raleigh, NC / Savannah, GA / Richmond, VA / Remote (Hybrid options available)

About Raymond:
We are a progressive, forward-thinking architecture and engineering consulting firm with over 30 years of experience. Employee-focused and technology-driven, we deliver high-quality, cost-effective, and precise services to clients across diverse market sectors, including federal government, healthcare, education, and commercial industries. Our commitment to innovation, employee development, and project excellence has established us as a leader in the industry.

Position: Structural Engineer
We are seeking an experienced Structural Engineer to join our Structural Engineering team. In this role, you will contribute to the design and analysis of structural systems for a wide variety of building and infrastructure projects. This position provides the opportunity to lead structural efforts on smaller projects or specific project components while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. The ideal candidate is technically strong, proactive, and capable of mentoring junior engineers while delivering high-quality engineering solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform structural design and analysis for building and infrastructure projects using materials such as structural steel, cold-formed steel, concrete, masonry, and wood.

  • Prepare and review structural calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical reports.

  • Utilize design and analysis software including AutoCAD, Revit, frame analysis software (e.g., RISA), and component design tools such as L-Pile, ENERCALC, or PCA MATS.

  • Lead structural discipline tasks for smaller projects or specific elements of larger projects.

  • Conduct technical reviews of engineering work prepared by other engineers and designers.

  • Perform field services including site assessments, structural inspections, and construction observations.

  • Coordinate with architects, civil engineers, mechanical engineers, and other project team members.

  • Assist with proposal development, project planning, and structural workhour estimates for projects.

  • Mentor junior engineers and designers, supporting their technical development and project contributions.

  • Support business development efforts and assist with marketing initiatives to expand client relationships.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Architectural Engineering from an ABET-accredited program (or equivalent international degree).

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in the United States required.

  • Minimum of 9–10+ years of structural engineering experience depending on education background.

  • Experience with structural design and analysis of building systems and foundations.

  • Proficiency with structural analysis and design software as well as AutoCAD and Revit.

  • Experience developing technical specifications and engineering documentation.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.

  • Familiarity with federal design criteria such as UFC, DoD, or VA standards is a plus.

  • Ability to travel and attend project meetings as required.

  • Pre-employment drug test, background check, and valid driver’s license required.

What We Offer:
We offer a collaborative work environment, competitive compensation, comprehensive benefits, and opportunities for professional development and leadership growth. If you are a motivated structural engineer looking to contribute to impactful projects while advancing your career, we encourage you to apply.

We participate in E-Verify.
