Job description

Position Highlights

We are seeking a technical professional with hands-on experience administering, configuring, developing, and supporting solutions within Technolutions Slate, ideally with experience in Slate Student Success. This role is best suited for individuals who have served as a technical administrator, engineer, developer, or solution architect and who are comfortable taking ownership of platform design, configuration, testing, documentation, deployment, and ongoing support. The position serves as the lead technical resource for Student Affairs' Slate Student Success implementation and requires the ability to translate business needs into scalable, sustainable technical solutions.

Successful candidates will have:

  • Hands-on experience configuring, developing, and supporting solutions within Technolutions Slate, preferably Slate Student Success.
  • Experience building and maintaining workflows, forms, communications, portals, automations, rules, queries, and other platform-based solutions.
  • Experience serving as a technical administrator, engineer, developer, or solution architect for a Slate environment.
  • Experience testing, troubleshooting, documenting, deploying, and supporting technical solutions throughout their lifecycle.
  • Strong collaboration skills, with the ability to partner effectively with functional stakeholders, technical teams, and vendors.
  • The ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience in higher education, student affairs, student success, or similarly complex service-oriented environments preferred.
  • Knowledge of accessibility-centered practices, inclusive technologies, Lean Six Sigma, or continuous improvement methodologies preferred.

Role Scope and Responsibilities

The Slate Engineer serves as the technical lead for Student Affairs' Slate Student Success implementation. This position is responsible for designing, configuring, testing, documenting, deploying, maintaining, and enhancing technical solutions within the Slate platform.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Building and maintaining Slate-based workflows, forms, portals, communications, automations, rules, queries, and related platform solutions.
  • Translating functional needs into technical designs that balance immediate priorities with long-term sustainability.
  • Testing and troubleshooting Slate solutions to ensure they are launch-ready, reliable, and aligned with divisional and university requirements.
  • Creating and maintaining documentation, standards, and repeatable processes so solutions can be supported beyond initial implementation.
  • Supporting implemented services across their lifecycle, including monitoring, issue resolution, enhancements, and refinements as needs evolve.
  • Partnering with Student Affairs stakeholders, RIT Information Technology Services, and vendors on integrations, infrastructure needs, system improvements, and technical problem-solving.
  • Representing Student Affairs in cross-functional technology conversations related to Slate Student Success and related systems.
  • Communicating technical concepts in clear, accessible language for diverse audiences.
  • Supporting technology solutions with attention to data integrity, information security, accessibility, and inclusive user experiences.

Systems & Business Analysis for the Division of Student Affairs

The Slate Engineer is part of the Systems and Business Analysis team within the Division of Student Affairs. The team supports technology systems, business processes, data integrity, information security, and sustainable operational solutions that help Student Affairs departments deliver services to students.

Within this team, the Slate Engineer serves as the lead technical resource for Student Affairs' Slate Student Success implementation. The role focuses on designing, implementing, and sustaining Slate-based solutions that support coordinated communication, workflow management, student engagement, and divisional operations. This position provides an opportunity to help shape how Student Affairs uses Slate as a scalable platform to support students and staff across the division.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Creates, tests, documents, deploys, and supports software applications for multiple products and platforms
  • Supports software solutions by studying information needs; conferring with users; studying systems flow, data usage, and work processes; investigating problem areas; and following the software development lifecycle
  • Performs coding, debugging, unit testing, troubleshooting and modification of product software
  • Participates in efforts to identify and implement best practices and data standards for the division. Ensures that services are supported, monitored, and maintained throughout the life cycle
  • Creates and maintains documentation for supported services
  • Troubleshoots performance issues and partners with other teams and vendors to implement improvements
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Knowledge of enterprise resource planning systems

  • Skill in advising groups on systems, networks, software, applications, and security issues
  • Ability to design, document, test, create, or modify computer programs
  • Ability to apply systems analysis techniques and procedures

Minimum Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in related field
  • 2 years of relevant experience
  • Equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered

Job Level Overview

Specialized Contributor Level 2 - A fully functional role requiring established knowledge of the profession or field of work. Responsible for completing substantive assignments and projects. Problems are varied and non-routine, and resolution requires exercising judgment, analysis, advisement, creativity, and understanding broader sets of issues. May provide assistance to entry level staff.
