What are some unique challenges of working remotely for a rural electric cooperative, and how can job seekers prepare for them?

Working remotely for a rural electric cooperative often involves coordinating with teams and field staff who may be spread across large geographic areas with limited connectivity. Job seekers should be prepared to use various communication tools and adapt to occasional delays or technology limitations. It's important to be self-motivated, proactive in reaching out to colleagues, and comfortable with both independent work and virtual collaboration. Familiarity with the cooperative's mission and rural community needs can also enhance effectiveness and job satisfaction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a leadership role at a remote rural electric cooperative, and why are they important?

To thrive in a leadership role at a remote rural electric cooperative, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, utility management, or related fields, often supported by relevant degrees and experience in the energy sector. Familiarity with SCADA systems, GIS mapping tools, and regulatory compliance certifications such as NRECA credentials is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and community engagement skills set standout leaders apart in this environment. These abilities are crucial for ensuring reliable electric service, regulatory compliance, and maintaining strong relationships with both team members and rural community stakeholders.

What is a Remote Rural Electric Cooperative?

A Remote Rural Electric Cooperative is a member-owned, not-for-profit utility organization that provides electricity to people living in rural or remote areas. These cooperatives are established to serve communities that are often not reached by larger, investor-owned utilities due to distance or low population density. Members of the cooperative democratically control the organization and share in its benefits, such as reliable, affordable electricity and community development initiatives. Remote rural electric cooperatives play a crucial role in improving the quality of life and supporting economic growth in underserved regions.

Job Description

The SVP, Business & Technology Strategies (BTS) leads programs that advance the business and technology capabilities of electric cooperatives through research, engineering, consulting, technology programs, and continued advancement of the cooperative business model. Working with NRECA colleagues and leaders in NRECA's membership, the BTS function evaluates electric cooperatives' technology needs, federal regulatory requirements, grant opportunities, human capital management, safety, and technology advances to create a strategic focus and vision for BTS programs.
