How to Become a Remote RN?
To become a remote nurse, you need the same training, education, and qualifications that non-remote nurses possess, namely nursing licensure in your state. Some virtual RN roles may also require some period of on-site training to learn procedures. Since your duties include performing patient triage via telephone, webcam, or chat apps, you also need strong technical skills and a high-speed internet connection. Fluency in more than one language is a big plus, as is a strong track record of success in self-directed roles. Additionally, a variety of telehealth certifications are available, and these increase your appeal with potential employers.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote RN, and why are they important?

What are Remote RNs?
What is the difference between Remote Rn vs Remote Lpn?
| Aspect | Remote Rn | Remote Lpn |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Registered Nurse (RN) license, BSN often preferred | Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license |
| Work Environment | Hospitals, clinics, telehealth platforms | Long-term care, home health, telehealth |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Hospitals, healthcare providers, telehealth companies | Long-term care facilities, home health agencies |
Remote Rns typically hold a registered nurse license and work in hospitals or telehealth settings, providing comprehensive patient care. Remote Lpns, with a practical nurse license, often work in long-term care or home health. While both roles involve remote patient interaction, Rns usually handle more complex cases, whereas Lpns focus on basic patient care tasks.

As a Registered Nurse serving remote First Nations communities in Alberta, you will play a vital role in delivering holistic, culturally competent care within an expanded scope of practice. This position involves assessing patients of all ages with diverse health needs, using critical thinking and evidence-based guidelines to develop and implement care plans. You'll collaborate with physicians, nurse practitioners, and interdisciplinary teams to provide primary care services, including newborn deliveries, acute illness treatment, and chronic care follow-ups. Beyond clinical duties, you'll educate, counsel, and advocate for patients while ensuring their physical, psychological, and spiritual well-being. In this dynamic environment, you'll manage urgent situations, coordinate medical evacuations when necessary, and maintain accurate documentation-all while making a meaningful impact in underserved communities.
As a Registered Nurse, you'll make a lasting impact by delivering exceptional, culturally competent care to remote and isolated First Nations communities in Alberta. This role offers the chance to practice at the top of your scope, collaborate with a dedicated team, and provide meaningful care across all stages of life:
- Deliver holistic, culturally sensitive community care tailored to the unique needs of remote and/or isolated First Nations communities.
- Provide ethical, high-quality care to patients of all ages and acuity levels-from neonates and pediatrics to adolescents, adults, and the elderly.
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals, including registered nurses, charge nurses, physicians, and interdisciplinary team members, to ensure safe, effective care within your scope of practice.
- Offer specialized services, such as wound care, prenatal care clinics, vaccination support, and chronic care follow-ups, to promote long-term health and wellness.
- Maintain accurate documentation in accordance with established guidelines to uphold the highest standards of care.
Minimum Requirements (must haves):

- Valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certificate (Heart and Stroke).
- Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate (Heart and Stroke).
- Valid Pediatrics Advanced Life Support (PALS) certificate (Heart and Stroke).
- Valid International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) certificate.
- An active driver's license and a clean driving record.
- 2 years of full-time nursing in the last five years in the emergency room, intensive care unit, or as a community health nurse in a remote/rural area.
- Additional critical care nursing experience (cardiovascular intensive care unit, post-anesthesia unit) is an asset.
- Alignment with our values of expertise, passion, respect, and care.
Preference for:
- An elevated level of knowledge and the ability to interpret relevant medical and operational guidelines, protocols, policies, and procedures.
- Knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite.
- Collaboration with others to achieve the best results and deliver the most value.
- Holding others accountable and expecting others to do the same.
By joining International SOS, you will contribute to a global network dedicated to protecting people and organisations. We offer a dynamic and respectful workplace where expertise, innovation, and collaboration drive our success.
