What is remote research development?

Remote research development refers to conducting research and development (R&D) activities from a location outside of a traditional office or laboratory setting, typically using digital tools and online collaboration. Professionals in this field work on creating, testing, and improving products, services, or processes while collaborating virtually with team members and stakeholders. This approach allows for greater flexibility, access to a wider talent pool, and often reduced overhead costs, but it also requires strong communication and self-management skills. Remote research development roles can be found in various industries such as technology, pharmaceuticals, engineering, and academia.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote research development professional?

To thrive as a Remote Research Development professional, you need strong analytical abilities, research methodology expertise, and typically an advanced degree in a relevant field. Familiarity with data analysis tools (such as SPSS, R, or Python), literature databases, and project management systems is often required. Excellent written communication, self-motivation, and collaboration skills are crucial to excel in a remote environment. These competencies enable high-quality research output, effective teamwork across distances, and successful management of complex projects.

What are some common challenges faced in a remote research development role and how can they be effectively managed?

One of the most common challenges in a Remote Research Development role is maintaining clear and consistent communication across distributed teams, which can impact project progress and idea sharing. Overcoming time zone differences and ensuring access to shared resources also require proactive planning and the use of collaborative tools. To manage these challenges, it’s important to establish regular check-ins, use reliable project management platforms, and foster an open culture where team members feel comfortable sharing updates and asking questions. Additionally, setting clear expectations and deliverables can help remote research teams stay aligned and productive.

Job description

Akumin is a leading provider of outpatient radiology and oncology services, partnering with top hospitals and health systems nationwide to deliver advanced diagnostic imaging and exceptional patient care close to home. With a national footprint, cutting-edge technology, and a strong commitment to innovation and patient-centered care, our teams play a vital role in improving outcomes for millions of patients each year.

This role is purpose-built to serve that business today and build it for tomorrow. We need someone who can come in, own the operational side of the research program end to end, and simultaneously develop the sponsor relationships and outbound motion that will drive its next phase of growth. It is an individual contributor position with direct revenue impact and a clear growth path as the program scales. The role reports to the Director of Strategy & Market Development - intentionally placed within a function focused on sales enablement, market development, and programmatic growth - reflecting the commercial ambition we have for this service line.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage all incoming research contract requests through intake, clinical feasibility review, pricing and legal vetting, and activation. Maintain a live contract baseline tracking study status, site assignments, modality mix, and tier classification.

  • Coordinate with site leaders, technologists, auth teams, and research coordinators to ensure protocol requirements are met. Serve as the primary operational point of contact for active research sponsors.

  • Own billing setup and ongoing revenue recognition for research studies. Develop and pursue a pipeline of prospective sponsor relationships - CROs, pharma, and academic research networks.

  • Lead sponsor-facing pricing conversations and proposal development for new contracts. Track CRO, pharma, and research sponsor activity in our core markets and identify prioritized targets.

  • Build and refine the intake workflow, including automation where possible.

Report on pipeline, revenue, and operational KPIs to leadership on a regular cadence.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • 3-6 years of experience in clinical research, CRO operations, imaging, or a closely adjacent commercial healthcare role

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage external relationships - sponsor, client, or account-facing experience required

  • Working knowledge of how clinical trials use imaging, what sponsors expect from site partners, and how research contracts are structured

  • Experience with billing, prior authorization, or revenue cycle in an imaging or clinical setting is a plus

  • Comfortable building workflows and using data tools; CRM, project management, or process automation experience is a plus

At Akumin, we invest in the well-being of our employees, so you can bring your best self to work each day. You can expect to see the following benefits:

  • Competitive compensation
  • Flexible scheduling
  • Cross training opportunities
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • HSA accounts with employer contributions
  • 401(k) eligibility with employer match
  • Paid holidays
  • Defined PTO and sick time programs

Eligibility for benefits will vary based on role type and hours worked.
