What is remote program management?

Remote program management is the practice of overseeing and coordinating multiple related projects or initiatives from a location outside of a traditional office setting, often leveraging digital tools and virtual collaboration platforms. Program managers in remote roles are responsible for aligning project objectives with organizational goals, managing resources, and ensuring effective communication among distributed teams. This approach allows organizations to access talent globally and maintain productivity without the constraints of physical offices. Remote program management requires strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills to ensure successful program delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote program manager?

To thrive as a Remote Program Manager, you need strong project management expertise, strategic planning abilities, and a background in business or a related field, often supported by a PMP or similar certification. Familiarity with project management tools like Asana, Jira, or Trello, and experience with virtual collaboration platforms such as Slack or Zoom, are typically required. Exceptional communication, organizational skills, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for leading distributed teams and managing stakeholders remotely. These competencies ensure efficient program delivery, foster alignment across locations, and drive successful outcomes in a virtual environment.

How does a remote program manager effectively coordinate projects and maintain communication with distributed teams?

Remote Program Managers typically use a combination of project management software, regular virtual meetings, and clear documentation to coordinate tasks across multiple locations and time zones. Effective communication is key, so they often establish structured routines—such as weekly status updates or daily stand-ups—to ensure alignment and quickly address any blockers. Building strong relationships with team members through transparent communication and fostering a culture of accountability are essential to overcoming the unique challenges of remote collaboration.

Job description

Role: Program Manager
Location: 100% remote, candidates MUST reside in DC, MD, VA, WV, PA, DE, NJ, NC, NY, FL, TX
Duration: 12-month contract

Summary:

Client is seeking a Program Manager to support a large-scale Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM) transition initiative. This resource will be responsible for leading and coordinating internal Client efforts across six (and eventually seven) workstreams. The work involves changing Client current PBM and bringing certain PBM functions in-house, affecting both business operations and IT systems. Additionally, this PBM transition aligns with other major initiatives at Client, including core system consolidation efforts such as the implementation of Facets G6, MuleSoft integration, Salesforce integration, and API-driven development initiatives.
Client is unsure whether it will migrate away from its current PBM or simply make enhancements and insource some functionality. They have selected an implementation partner to support this initiative. This candidate will work with the Implementation Partner's Program Manager and act as the Program Manager representing Client for this initiative.

Client 7 key workstreams: Customer Experience, Pharmacy Networks, Client Setup, Data Exchange, Benefits & Claims Operations, Clinical Programs and Formulary, Business Readiness

Required

  • Active PMP certification
  • 10+ years of experience in program management with a Bachelor's degree (or additional 4 years of experience) with experience leading programs of more than $50M
  • Experience leading enterprise-level, high-visibility program-level implementation projects in the healthcare / PBM space
  • Direct experience with PBM (Pharmacy Benefit Manager) implementations, migrations, or operations. This can be at a health plan or directly with a PBM
  • Ability to synthesize multiple workstreams into executive-level reporting

Nice to have:

  • Experience with the Facets core system migration
  • Experience in MuleSoft, Salesforce integration, and/or API implementation
  • Understanding of healthcare claims, benefits, and pharmacy operations
