Remote Mechanical Engineering Apprentice information

What is a remote mechanical engineering apprentice?

A Remote Mechanical Engineering Apprentice is an entry-level professional who learns and assists with mechanical engineering tasks while working from a remote location. This role typically involves supporting experienced engineers, participating in the design and analysis of mechanical systems, and developing technical skills through hands-on projects and online collaboration. Apprentices receive training and mentorship while gaining practical experience, which can help them qualify for more advanced engineering roles in the future. The remote aspect allows apprentices to work from home or anywhere with internet access, using digital tools to communicate and complete assignments. This position is ideal for those interested in mechanical engineering who seek flexibility and real-world learning opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote mechanical engineering apprentice?

To thrive as a Remote Mechanical Engineering Apprentice, you need a solid grounding in engineering fundamentals, mathematics, and design principles, often supported by a relevant degree or coursework. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), simulation tools, and collaborative platforms like Microsoft Teams or Slack is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and effective communication are vital soft skills for excelling in a remote environment. These skills and tools are important to ensure accurate project contributions, efficient teamwork, and ongoing professional development while working remotely.

How does a remote mechanical engineering apprentice collaborate effectively with senior engineers and team members?

As a remote mechanical engineering apprentice, effective collaboration is typically achieved through regular virtual meetings, shared digital workspaces, and clear communication channels such as email and instant messaging. Apprentices often participate in design reviews, provide updates on ongoing projects, and seek feedback through these platforms. Utilizing tools like CAD software with cloud integration and project management platforms ensures everyone stays aligned on tasks and deadlines. Proactive communication and willingness to ask questions are key to building strong working relationships remotely.

What is the difference between Remote Mechanical Engineering Apprentice vs Remote Mechanical Engineering Intern?

AspectRemote Mechanical Engineering ApprenticeRemote Mechanical Engineering Intern
CredentialsEnrolled in or recent graduate of mechanical engineering programEnrolled in or recent graduate of mechanical engineering program
Work EnvironmentSupervised remote tasks, often entry-level projectsAssists with ongoing projects, learning-focused
Employer UsageCompanies seeking to train new talent remotelyOrganizations offering internship programs for students

Both roles typically require similar educational backgrounds and are used by companies to develop skills remotely. The main difference is that apprentices may have a more structured training program, while interns focus on gaining practical experience. Both positions serve as entry points into the remote mechanical engineering field.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

As a Senior Engineer - Civil & Structures, you'll play a key role in delivering safe, innovative, and cost-effective civil and structural engineering solutions for utility-scale renewable energy projects. Depending on your background and interests, you'll support projects during preconstruction/estimating or project engineering, helping shape projects from early concept through construction and project closeout.

A typical day may involve developing conceptual civil and structural designs, reviewing engineering packages, evaluating constructability, coordinating with Owners and Engineers of Record (EOR), and solving complex technical challenges across multiple concurrent projects. You'll work closely with Engineering, Estimating, Integrated Supply Chain, Construction, and Project Management to ensure designs are safe, economical, constructible, and aligned with client requirements.

Whether you're supporting Solar Project Engineering or Wind Estimating Engineering, you'll contribute to projects involving structural steel, reinforced concrete foundations, pile and foundation design, site grading, drainage, hydrology, geotechnical coordination, and utility-scale renewable energy infrastructure.

STEP INTO THE ROLE

  • Develop civil and structural engineering solutions supporting utility-scale renewable energy projects through either estimating or project execution.
  • Lead civil and structural design development, Basis of Design (BOD) documentation, engineering reviews, RFIs, and technical deliverables throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Review engineering drawings, structural calculations, grading plans, foundation designs, and third-party engineering packages to ensure quality, constructability, and compliance.
  • Collaborate with Owners, Engineers of Record (EOR), Estimating, Project Engineering, Integrated Supply Chain, and Construction teams to deliver safe, reliable, and cost-effective engineering solutions.
  • Support civil and structural quantity takeoffs, value engineering, constructability reviews, and technical risk assessments that improve proposal competitiveness and project execution.
  • Coordinate engineering activities with geotechnical consultants, surveyors, permitting agencies, and equipment suppliers throughout the engineering lifecycle.
  • Mentor Engineer I, Engineer II, and CAD Designers through technical guidance, coaching, and engineering best practices.
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects while maintaining engineering quality, schedule commitments, and client expectations.
  • Identify opportunities to improve engineering standards, workflows, and design quality through continuous improvement initiatives.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

  • Bachelor's degree in civil, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited college.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certification required, or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
  • Four or more years of progressive civil and structural engineering experience supporting utility-scale renewable energy, industrial, EPC, heavy civil, or infrastructure projects.
  • Experience managing multiple engineering priorities while collaborating across multidisciplinary teams.

WHAT SETS YOU APART

  • Experience supporting utility-scale solar or wind projects.
  • Strong knowledge of structural steel, reinforced concrete, pile and foundation design, site grading, drainage, hydrology, geotechnical coordination, and civil site development.
  • Experience in either Estimating Engineering (preconstruction) or Project Engineering (project execution), or a combination of both.
  • Experience collaborating with Owners, Engineers of Record (EOR), EPC partners, surveyors, geotechnical consultants, and construction teams throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Passion for solving complex engineering challenges, mentoring junior engineers, and continuously improving engineering quality and project delivery.

HOW WE INVEST IN YOU

  • Competitive pay
  • 100% employer paid HDHP insurance premiums for employees
  • 401(k) with company match
  • HSA and FSA options
  • Dental and Vision insurance
  • Education Assistance (Tuition Reimbursement)
