Job description

Overview

Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) is seeking a Senior Payroll Analyst to be based in our Aiken, SC location on the Savannah River Site (SRS). 

The Senior Payroll Analyst analyzes, audits, reconciles and resolves payroll processing and employee payroll issues to ensure smooth payroll processing. Ensures payroll reporting, policies and payments are compliant with company policy, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and applicable regulations. Researches and interprets applicable regulatory requirements and resolves tax, withholding, garnishment, and wage/hour issues for payroll processing. Responds to auditing and regulatory inquiries. Creates operating procedures/practices, monitors monthly journal entries and accrual schedules. May work with system programmers and/or vendor to achieve solutions or administer company payroll system with outside service provider.

Responsibilities
  • Verifies manual pay lines are accurate before submitting for payment.
  • Extracts, analyzes, and reconciles payroll, deduction, tax and benefit data on a scheduled and ad-hoc basis for timely and accurate payment and booking.  This includes, but is not limited to, deductions/accounts such as medical, dental, vision, 401K, FSA, federal, state and local tax, life insurance, worker's compensation, child support, garnishments, and specialty deductions such as credit union and car insurance for employees.
  • Investigates out of balance situations and conducts research to resolve.  Ensures all accounts balance according to company policy or practice.
  • Produces wire transfers, accounts payable vouchers, ACH, and positive pay files.
  • Reviews benefit administrative fee invoices and prepares paperwork for payment.
  • Accumulates data to prepare and submit quarterly and yearly Federal and State Tax Returns (ie. 941 forms)
  • Prepares file for journal entry cost redistribution.
  • Researches and processes payroll and benefit adjustment entries.
  • Handles wage under/overpayments.  Acquires repayment if possible.
  • Calculates and prepares off cycle check requests.
  • Tracks ongoing benefit expenses for company budgeting/costing purposes.
  • Compiles, analyzes and submits payroll, benefit and other information for periodic and adhoc reports such as the semi-annual report on compensation or the annual WFIS report to satisfy DOE requirements/requests.
  • Works with SRMC employees who believe their paycheck is inaccurate or who may have taxation or garnishment issues.  Investigates, resolves and communicates back to employee.
  • Improves and streamlines work activities and processes. 
  • May train others still learning the discipline or act as mentor.
  • Ensures payroll reporting and payments are compliant with company policy, generally accepted accounting principles, and federal, state and IRS regulations.
  • Responds to auditing, corporate and regulatory inquiries.
  • Works with system support to achieve solutions to issues or process improvements.
  • Completes monthly and quarterly General Ledger account reconciliations.
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or related plus progressive experience in payroll or accounting. 

Additional Information: 

  • Incumbents not possessing a Bachelor's degree may qualify with an additional 4 years of applicable experience or combination of education or experience
  • *This position may support a percentage of telework in accordance with the SRMC Telework Policy (Remote Restricted: The employee must remain within the local commuting area - e.g., within 2 hours - of the worksite for business reasons.)

    Teleworking employees may work offsite, typically at home. All teleworking arrangements must be approved at the discretion of Management on a case-by-case basis based on a number of factors, including - without limitation - business need, the nature of the job, employee experience, management preference, and state-by-state legal compliance/requirements.

  • Experience with at least one payroll system
  • Experience with databases and familiarity with queries
  • Strong understanding of accruals, debits and credits
  • In-depth understanding of the end-to-end payroll cycle and how it translates to general accounting systems and reporting
