Job description

Ventus, part of Digi International, is an industry leader in IT networking innovations, leveraging technology to produce market-driving network solutions. Operating from over 20 years of experience delivering secure enterprise class networks, Ventus develops cellular wireless and fixed line SD-WAN, Hybrid WAN, and Cellular WAN solutions for an expanding array of business connectivity applications.
Location: Hopkins, MN, Norwalk, CT, or Remote US.
Position
We are seeking a Senior Principal Architect to own the design, evolution, and standardization of Ventus's cellular IoT and managed network service platforms. This is a deeply technical, internally-focused role (~70% internal architecture / ~30% customer-facing) where you will define reference architectures across cellular WAN, SD-WAN, SASE, and cloud-managed network services - with direct engagement on strategic RFPs and customer design reviews. The ideal candidate brings 10+ years of network architecture experience in a cellular-first MSP, MVNO, or MNO environment, with hands-on expertise in LTE/5G, eSIM, multi-tenant infrastructure, and meaningful exposure to banking, lottery, retail, or critical infrastructure customers.
What You Will Do
Platform Architecture
  • Define and own cellular IoT reference architectures spanning LTE/4G and 5G, optimized for the availability and security demands of critical IoT infrastructure customers.
  • Lead SD-WAN and SASE architecture across distributed cellular and hybrid WAN environments, including segmentation and security integration for regulated industries.
  • Architect and evolve the multi-tenant MSP network platform: BGP/OSPF routing, IPsec/GRE VPN, QoS, and carrier-grade high availability, backed by Datacenter/Colo and AWS hybrid connectivity (Direct Connect, Transit Gateway, VPC).
  • Develop and enforce network design standards, reference architectures, and documentation that drive consistent, repeatable service delivery at scale.

Vertical Market & Compliance Alignment
  • Develop vertical-specific reference architectures for Ventus's core markets: branch and ATM connectivity for financial services, secure real-time transaction networks for lottery and gaming, multi-site retail, and critical IoT infrastructure.
  • Architect connectivity solutions that satisfy the uptime, security, and compliance requirements of regulated industries, including PCI-DSS-aligned segmentation and financial services network resilience standards.
  • Partner with Product and Engineering to translate vertical regulatory and audit requirements into concrete platform design decisions.

Technical Leadership & Customer Engagement
  • Serve as Tier-4 escalation authority for complex cellular, SD-WAN, and hybrid WAN issues across the managed services platform.
  • Mentor network engineers; lead architecture reviews, vendor evaluations, and cross-team knowledge transfer.
  • On strategic deals and RFPs (~30% of time): lead design workshops, author SOWs, and present architecture recommendations to enterprise buyers and their technical teams.

Who You Are and What You Bring
  • 10+ years in network engineering and architecture, with at least 5 years in an MSP, MVNO/MVNE, or cellular-first managed services environment.
  • Demonstrable expertise in distributed network architecture: LTE/4G and 5G RAN, core, and transport; SIM/eSIM lifecycle; MVNO/MVNE carrier integrations; APN/PDN management.
  • Strong hands-on experience with SD-WAN, hybrid WAN, and core routing/switching: BGP, OSPF, IPsec/GRE, QoS, and multi-tenant network segmentation.
  • AWS networking proficiency: VPC, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, Route 53, NACLs, Security Groups.
  • Experience with IoT device management platforms (Ventus Genesis, Digi Remote Manager, Cradlepoint NetCloud, or equivalent) at scale.
  • Active CCNP; CCIE is a significant differentiator. AWS Certified Advanced Networking - Specialty strongly preferred.
  • Translates complex cellular IoT and network architecture into clear direction for both engineers and non-technical executive stakeholders.
  • Sets architectural direction and drives consensus across engineering, product, and sales without requiring direct authority.
  • Execution-oriented: brings large platform initiatives and cross-functional deliverables to completion with rigor and judgment.

Desired But Not Required
  • Vertical experience in one or more of Ventus's core markets: banking/financial services branch and ATM networks, lottery and gaming, multi-site retail, or critical infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with SASE platforms (Zscaler, Palo Alto Prisma Access, Cisco Umbrella) and Zero Trust frameworks in multi-tenant managed service environments.
  • Knowledge of PCI-DSS network segmentation, financial services resilience standards, or critical infrastructure protection requirements.
  • Pre-sales or solutions engineering background: RFP authoring, SOW development, and executive-level technical presentations.

Why Join Us?
  • Real architectural scope: your decisions shape how banks, lottery operators, retailers, and critical infrastructure customers across North America stay connected at scale.
  • Live frontier work: eSIM at scale, 4G LTE/5G for enterprise IoT, SASE for distributed operations - active initiatives, not roadmap items.
  • Digi International backing: carrier relationships, hardware ecosystem, and global resources, with the focus and agility of a specialized MSP.
