Fractional COO - Turning Vision into Daily Operating Reality (Remote)

Company: How To MANAGE a Small Law Firm (HTM)
Location: 100% Remote (Must reside in AZ, CO, FL, GA, IL, MD, MI, NC, NJ, NY, PA, TX, VA, or WA)
Department: Executive Leadership
Employment Type: Full-Time | W-2 Employee
Compensation: $110,000 Base Salary + Performance Compensation | $182,000+ On-Target Earnings

STOP: Please Read Before Applying

This role requires direct experience working with multiple small to mid-sized business owners simultaneously as a COO, Fractional COO, EOS Integrator, Business Advisor, Business Coach, or in a multi-client operating environment.

Have you done this?

YES - We'd love to hear from you. Please continue reading.

NO - This position is likely not the right fit.

This is a U.S.-based position. Applicants must currently reside in one of the listed states (AZ, CO, FL, GA, IL, MD, MI, NC, NJ, NY, PA, TX, VA, or WA) and be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship. We are unable to consider candidates residing outside the U.S.

Vision Without Execution Is Just a Plan.

At How To MANAGE a Small Law Firm (HTM), our Fractional COOs help business owners transform ambitious goals into disciplined execution.

As the operational leader for a portfolio of approximately 30 growing law firms, you will help owners build the systems, accountability, and leadership structure required to create measurable business results.

This is a full-time W-2 executive position - not a 1099 consulting opportunity or independent fractional practice.

You'll enjoy the variety and challenge of working with multiple businesses while receiving the stability, benefits, compensation, and support of a full-time leadership role. HTM provides the clients, systems, and infrastructure so you can focus on what you do best: helping business owners build stronger organizations.

If you have personally partnered with entrepreneurs, improved how their businesses operate, and driven execution - not just managed operations inside a company - this role was built for you.

Legal industry experience is not required. We will teach you everything you need to know about serving law firms.

About HTM

How To MANAGE a Small Law Firm is the nation's leading provider of Fractional C-Suite services for solo and small law firms.

Recognized as an Inc. 5000 Fastest-Growing Company every year since 2013, HTM partners with entrepreneurial law firm owners who have built successful practices but need experienced operational leadership to create scalable businesses.

Our clients don't need another consultant.

They need an operator who helps make the business work.

Who This Role Is For

You will likely thrive in this role if you:

  • Enjoy helping entrepreneurs build businesses that operate without depending on the owner every day.
  • Love creating systems, accountability, and operational excellence.
  • Have partnered directly with founders or business owners to improve performance.
  • Enjoy coaching leaders while driving measurable execution.
  • Thrive in a fast-paced, multi-client environment where every business presents a unique challenge.
  • Want the stability and benefits of a full-time W-2 position while still enjoying the variety of advisory work.
What You'll Do

As a Fractional COO, you will help business owners turn vision into daily operating reality by:

  • Serving as the operational leader for approximately 30 client businesses.
  • Building scalable operational systems and workflows.
  • Creating KPI dashboards, scorecards, and accountability rhythms.
  • Improving operational efficiency and profitability.
  • Identifying and eliminating operational bottlenecks.
  • Strengthening hiring, delegation, and organizational structure.
  • Translating strategic goals into weekly execution plans.
  • Coaching owners to lead with data instead of instinct.
  • Helping businesses become less owner-dependent and more scalable.
  • Building trusted, long-term relationships with business owners.
  • Collaborating with internal teams to deliver an exceptional client experience.

This is hands-on operational leadership.

You won't simply recommend improvements - you will work alongside owners to implement changes, measure progress, and create lasting operational improvements.

Required Qualifications
  • Direct experience managing multiple client relationships simultaneously as a COO, Fractional COO, EOS Integrator, Business Advisor, Business Coach, or multi-client operating leader.
  • Experience advising or partnering directly with founders or business owners.
  • Strong operational and financial business acumen.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • High emotional intelligence and executive presence.
  • Ability to coach business owners while holding them accountable for execution.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional leadership experience.
Ideal Candidate

The strongest candidates will have:

  • 10+ years of operational leadership experience.
  • Experience supporting businesses with approximately $1M-$35M+ in annual revenue.
  • Full ownership of business operations at some point in their career.
  • Experience building operational systems, KPIs, scorecards, and accountability structures.
  • Experience helping organizations scale beyond founder dependence.
  • Confidence leading difficult conversations with empathy and professionalism.
  • Experience serving multiple organizations or operating as a Fractional COO.
Success in This Role

Your success will be measured by the operational outcomes your clients achieve:

  • Scalable systems that drive consistent execution.
  • Leadership teams using KPIs and scorecards effectively.
  • Improved operational efficiency and profitability.
  • Stronger accountability throughout the organization.
  • Improved delegation and leadership development.
  • Businesses that operate successfully without depending on the owner every day.
This Role Is NOT a Fit If
  • You are looking for a consulting or contract opportunity.
  • You prefer leading one company instead of partnering with multiple business owners.
  • You want to continue building your own consulting or Fractional COO practice.
  • Your experience is limited to large enterprise organizations.
  • You have only managed operations inside a single company.
  • You prefer maintaining existing systems rather than building new ones.
  • You focus primarily on strategy without driving execution.
  • You thrive only in highly structured corporate environments.
Compensation & Benefits
  • $110,000 Base Salary
  • Performance Compensation with $182,000+ On-Target Earnings
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance (75% employer-paid)
  • Company-paid short- and long-term disability insurance
  • 401(k) with company match (up to 3.5%)
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Company-wide paid shutdown during Thanksgiving week
  • One additional mandatory paid week off annually
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Pet insurance
  • Legal insurance
  • Professional and executive leadership development
  • 100% remote work environment
Why Join HTM?

This isn't just another operations role.

You'll become the trusted operational advisor entrepreneurs rely on to build businesses that execute consistently, scale effectively, and thrive without depending on the owner every day.

At HTM, you'll join a collaborative, high-performing team that values:

  • Ownership
  • Accountability
  • Transparency
  • Continuous learning
