Apex is seeking an experienced EHS Compliance Project Manager to be based in Southern California, remote options available. This individual will have at least six years of a combination of industry and consulting experience managing industrial, commercial, and retail compliance with varied environmental and safety regulations in California, including hazardous waste generator compliance, Aboveground Storage Tank (AST) compliance, hazardous waste generator requirements, environmental permitting, and worker training in California.

This individual will serve as a compliance subject matter expert and project/program manager, responsible for proposals, budgets, schedules, project safety, deliverable quality, and client satisfaction for EHS compliance, permitting, and field implantation for 3 primary clients and collaboration with various Apex National and Regional Account managers to provide related services for other accounts.

The successful candidate will serve as a technical leader and client manager, responsible for delivering high-quality compliance services while ensuring strong client relationships, regulatory compliance, and project performance. This individual will collaborate with internal teams and subcontractors to support environmental compliance programs across multiple facilities.

Your Responsibilities as a Project Manager:

  • Manage environmental compliance programs for multiple clients, with a focus on AST, APSA, and Hazardous Waste Generator permitting, training, inspection, and regulatory compliance.
  • Oversee hazardous waste generator compliance activities in accordance with California and federal regulations.
  • Lead and grow the AST Compliance service line, ensuring high-quality service delivery and continued revenue performance.
  • Serve as a primary client contact, maintaining strong relationships and ensuring a high level of client satisfaction.
  • Prepare and manage technical proposals, scopes of work, and budgets for compliance projects.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors and internal technical teams to ensure successful project execution.
  • Ensure projects meet safety, quality, schedule, and financial performance goals.
  • Conduct or oversee facility inspections, regulatory reporting, and compliance documentation.
  • Provide technical guidance and regulatory interpretation related to ASTs, hazardous waste generator requirements, and related environmental compliance programs.
  • Support collaboration with staff across multiple divisions to deliver integrated environmental services.
  • 10% - 20% field work performing inspections, AST replacement oversight, SPCC inspections, and related activities.

What we're looking for:

  • Bachelor's degree in science, construction management, or related field.
  • 8+ years of relevant environmental compliance experience for diverse California industrial, commercial, and retail facilities.
  • Demonstrated experience with Aboveground Storage Tank (AST) permitting, inspection, and compliance programs.
  • Strong knowledge of hazardous waste generator regulations and environmental compliance requirements in California.
  • Experience managing client relationships, proposals, and project budgets.
  • Strong verbal communication and technical writing skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and manage subcontractor relationships.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Combination of environmental compliance experience in industry and as a consultant.
  • Strong combination of diverse Federal and state environmental compliance regulations, client service focus, team building, and project management experience.
  • Knowledge of California regulatory programs related to hazardous waste and storage tanks.
  • Field experience performing environmental compliance inspections, audits, and oversight of AST installation/replacement.
