What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Developer Advocate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Developer Advocate, you need a strong background in software development, technical writing, and public speaking, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with developer tools, cloud platforms, APIs, and content management systems—as well as experience using platforms like GitHub and documentation tools—is typical. Excellent communication, community engagement, and collaboration skills are crucial for building trust and fostering relationships with developer communities. These abilities ensure you can effectively bridge the gap between engineering teams and external developers, driving product adoption and user satisfaction.

How does a remote Developer Advocate typically collaborate with engineering and product teams?

As a remote Developer Advocate, you will frequently collaborate with engineering and product teams through virtual meetings, asynchronous communication (like Slack or email), and shared documentation platforms. Your role involves acting as a bridge between external developers and internal teams, so you’ll often gather feedback from the developer community and relay it to shape product features or identify pain points. Building strong relationships across departments and proactively communicating insights are key to ensuring that developer needs are understood and prioritized, even when working remotely.

What is a Remote Developer Advocate?

A Remote Developer Advocate is a professional who works primarily from a remote location to bridge the gap between software developers and a company’s products or services. They engage with developer communities, create technical content, and provide feedback to internal teams to improve products. Their main goal is to support and empower developers by offering guidance, resources, and advocacy, all while working outside of a traditional office environment. This role often involves public speaking, writing tutorials, and building community relationships online.

Position Overview

At Autodesk, our Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) Data Model team is focused on shaping the future of how customers access, manage, and unlock value from their data across the project and asset lifecycle. We design the APIs, services, and user interfaces that power Autodesk's data platform ecosystem and enable critical AEC workflows.

As a Senior Experience Designer, you will collaborate closely with Product Management, Engineering, User Research, and Design partners to drive the experience strategy for complex, data-driven platform products. You will help shape how customers and developers interact with granular project and asset data, enabling powerful new insights and more connected workflows across Autodesk's ecosystem.

We are looking for a designer who is a strong human-centered design advocate, a creative problemsolver, and a highimpact facilitator. This designer must be someone who is passionate about crafting worldclass platform experiences in technically complex and ambiguous problem spaces.

For consideration, candidates must include both a resume + portfolio with password when applying.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with product managers, engineers, user researchers, and designers to define and deliver great experiences from initial concept through successful implementation

  • Collaborate across teams to ensure design work remains aligned with adjacent products and platform initiatives

  • Visualize and prototype solutions at multiple levels of fidelity, from highlevel wireframes to testable, interactive highfidelity prototypes

  • Rapidly develop and validate experience concepts through internal reviews and direct user feedback

  • Facilitate and participate in design thinking workshops, brainstorming sessions, and crossfunctional working sessions

  • Apply and contribute to design system standards to ensure consistency and cohesion across platform experiences

  • Lead design presentations and discussions with a broad range of stakeholders and audiences

  • Maintain close contact with users through interviews, field research, and user events, translating insights into new and improved experiences

  • Research user interface trends and emerging technologies, assessing their potential impact on datacentric user experiences

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional experience in user experience design and user research

  • Demonstrated experience designing complex B2B or technical platform products

  • Strong understanding of AEC customer workflows and experience designing BIM and 3D applications

  • Experience with complex data management concepts and related experience design patterns

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience

  • A current portfolio demonstrating enterprise UX case studies

  • Strong facilitation skills and comfort working in complex, ambiguous technical environments

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to distill complex ideas and reframe challenges clearly and optimistically

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing or working with AIsupported tools and workflows, and familiarity with emerging AI concepts such as Agents and MCPs

  • Firsthand experience across the AEC project lifecycle and with Autodesk tools such as Revit, AutoCAD, and Forma

  • Experience auditing, integrating, or optimizing existing user experiences

  • Working knowledge of platform concepts such as SDKs and APIs

The Ideal Candidate

  • Passionate about designing tools that help people solve meaningful, realworld problems

  • Comfortable navigating complexity and ambiguity with curiosity and empathy

  • Collaborative, optimistic, and proactive in building shared understanding across teams

  • A systems thinker who enjoys connecting experiences across products and platforms

  • Takes ownership and leads design work with minimal oversight

  • Advocates strongly for user needs while balancing technical and business considerations

  • Actively seeks feedback and helps raise the quality of design across the team
