What is remote computer engineering?

Remote computer engineering refers to the practice of working as a computer engineer from a location outside of a traditional office, often from home or another remote setting. Remote computer engineers design, develop, test, and maintain computer hardware and software systems, collaborating with teams using digital communication tools. This role requires strong technical skills, self-motivation, and the ability to manage projects independently while staying connected with colleagues virtually. Remote positions are popular in the tech industry due to their flexibility and access to a global talent pool.

How do remote computer engineers typically collaborate with team members across different time zones?

Remote computer engineers often work with colleagues located in various parts of the world, which requires effective communication and collaboration tools. Teams usually rely on project management platforms, version control systems, and regular video meetings to stay aligned. Clear documentation, asynchronous communication, and flexible schedules help ensure that everyone can contribute efficiently, even when working hours don't fully overlap. Adapting to this environment can be challenging at first, but it fosters strong communication skills and autonomy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote computer engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Computer Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, software development, and problem-solving, usually supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with programming languages, version control systems like Git, and cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure is typically required, alongside certifications like CompTIA or AWS Certified Solutions Architect. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and time management are essential soft skills for effective remote collaboration and productivity. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality technical solutions while working independently in distributed teams.

What is the difference between Remote Computer Engineering vs Remote Software Development?

AspectRemote Computer EngineeringRemote Software Development
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Engineering, certifications like Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Network+Bachelor's in Computer Science or Software Engineering, certifications like Microsoft Certified, AWS Developer
Work EnvironmentDesigning hardware, embedded systems, network infrastructure; often involves labs or on-site hardware testingWriting, testing, and deploying software applications; primarily computer-based work
Employer & Industry UsageTelecommunications, hardware manufacturing, embedded systems companiesTech companies, startups, software firms, IT services

Remote Computer Engineering focuses on hardware design, embedded systems, and network infrastructure, often requiring specialized certifications and hardware labs. In contrast, Remote Software Development centers on coding, testing, and deploying software applications, with a primary emphasis on programming skills and cloud certifications. Both roles are in high demand but serve different technical needs within the tech industry.

Are remote computer engineers still in demand?

Remote computer engineering remains in high demand due to ongoing digital transformation and the need for software development, system design, and cybersecurity expertise. Professionals with skills in programming languages, cloud platforms, and remote collaboration tools are especially sought after across various industries.

Can you work remotely as a computer engineer?

Yes, many computer engineering roles can be performed remotely, especially those involving software development, system design, and troubleshooting. Remote work often requires strong communication skills, familiarity with collaboration tools, and sometimes specific certifications or security clearances depending on the employer.

Which remote computer engineering jobs can be done remotely?

Remote computer engineering jobs include roles such as software engineer, hardware engineer, systems architect, and embedded systems developer. These positions often require skills in programming, hardware design, or system integration and can be performed from a home office with access to necessary tools and internet connectivity.

Job description

The Team:

Upstart Bank is an evolution of Upstart's AI lending platform, focused on simplifying the regulatory infrastructure behind our marketplace while expanding access to credit nationwide. By moving from a fragmented, state-based system to a unified federal framework, Upstart Bank enables more consistent borrower experiences, reduces structural costs, and unlocks opportunities to improve pricing, compliance, and access to credit at scale.

As Senior Manager, Software Engineering for Upstart Bank, you will lead one or more engineering teams responsible for a critical area of the bank platform. You will translate product, regulatory, and operational priorities into technical plans and reliable execution across systems spanning areas such as payments, funding, reporting, or integrations. You will partner closely with Product, Compliance, Legal, Risk, Finance, Operations, and senior engineering leaders to deliver scalable, reliable, and audit-ready infrastructure for a modern banking platform.

This is a rare opportunity to help build a modern bank platform from an early foundation rather than inherit a legacy core.

How you'll make an impact

  • Lead and grow one or more engineering teams responsible for a critical area of the Upstart Bank platform
  • Drive execution across complex, bank-critical systems in areas such as ledgering and funding, deposits and payments, reporting, or integrations
  • Partner with Product, Compliance, Legal, Risk, Finance, and Operations to translate business and regulatory needs into technical plans and delivered software
  • Contribute to technical direction and architecture for your area, ensuring systems support reliability, resilience, security, traceability, and auditability
  • Manage cross-functional dependencies and improve the predictability and quality of delivery across teams
  • Build engineering processes that support internal controls, audits, change management, and reliable operation in a regulated environment
  • Hire, coach, and develop engineers and emerging engineering leaders
  • Foster a culture of rigor, ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 8+ years of engineering experience, including 3+ years of engineering management experience
  • Experience leading engineering teams through complex, cross-functional platform or infrastructure initiatives
  • Strong technical background with experience contributing to architecture and technical direction for distributed systems, cloud platforms, or business-critical infrastructure
  • Experience operating in regulated, high-control, or high-reliability environments where quality, controls, auditability, and change management are critical

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building or integrating core financial infrastructure such as ledgering, payments, deposits, funding systems, reporting, or financial integrations
  • Experience in banking, fintech, payments, lending, or other regulated financial systems
  • Experience building platforms that support internal controls, audits, and reliable operation in regulated environments
  • Experience leading platform modernization, core-system launches, vendor integrations, or major infrastructure transformations
  • Experience developing senior engineers, tech leads, or emerging engineering leaders
  • Demonstrated ability to balance speed, quality, reliability, and compliance in high-stakes technical environments
  • Interest in improving access to credit through technology and scalable financial infrastructure

Position location This role is available in the following locations: Remote

Travel requirements As a digital first company, the majority of your work can be accomplished remotely. The majority of our employees can live and work anywhere in the U.S but are encouraged to to still spend high quality time in-person collaborating via regular onsites. The in-person sessions' cadence varies depending on the team and role; most teams meet once or twice per quarter for 2-4 consecutive days at a time.
