Job description

Hastings Insurance is seeking a Commercial Underwriting Technician to support the placement of commercial risks that meet established underwriting guidelines. In this role, you'll review, approve, and process commercial business within assigned authority while supporting underwriting profitability and growth in alignment with corporate goals.
Working as part of a collaborative underwriting team, you'll help maintain consistent professional service standards, support policy maintenance and underwriting initiatives, and contribute to the success of an assigned geographic territory by providing responsive, accurate underwriting support.
Location & Schedule:
  • This is a full-time, salaried position working Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • This role is primarily remote and requires approximately one in-office day per month at our Hastings headquarters.
  • Additional in-person meetings may be required based on business needs.
  • Candidates should reside within a reasonable driving distance of Hastings, Michigan.

What You'll Do:
  • Review, approve, and process commercial applications within assigned underwriting authority and established underwriting guidelines.
  • Process policy changes within assigned underwriting authority.
  • Prepare and route policy changes requiring approval outside assigned authority.
  • Collaborate with underwriters and fellow underwriting technicians to support an assigned geographic territory and achieve team goals.
  • Provide backup coverage and training support for team members as needed.
  • Maintain consistent professional standards of customer service in all interactions.
  • Actively participate in professional development, including continuing education and self-improvement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by leadership.

What You'll Bring:
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of INS Series coursework or equivalent work experience required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and general PC skills.
  • Ability to interpret underwriting guidelines and apply underwriting authority appropriately.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
