What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Coffee Farm Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Coffee Farm Manager, you need expertise in agricultural management, coffee cultivation, and supply chain logistics, often supported by a degree in agronomy or related experience. Familiarity with farm management software, irrigation systems, and quality control certifications like Fair Trade or Rainforest Alliance is common. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and cross-cultural communication skills set top performers apart. These abilities ensure sustainable crop yields, efficient operations, and successful coordination with teams and international buyers.

What unique challenges might I face while managing a remote coffee farm, and how can I prepare for them?

Managing a remote coffee farm often means dealing with limited access to resources, such as agricultural supplies, reliable internet, and skilled labor. Communication with team members and buyers may require creative solutions, like using satellite phones or scheduling regular trips to areas with better connectivity. Additionally, you may need to handle a broader range of responsibilities, from overseeing crop health to managing logistics. Preparing by building a dependable local network and staying updated on remote management technologies can make these challenges more manageable.

What is a remote coffee farm?

A remote coffee farm is a coffee-growing operation situated in a geographically isolated or hard-to-reach area, often far from major cities or distribution centers. These farms are typically located in rural, mountainous regions where the climate and altitude are ideal for growing high-quality coffee beans. Being remote can pose challenges such as limited access to infrastructure, transportation, and services, but it may also contribute to unique coffee flavors due to distinct microclimates and traditional farming methods. Remote coffee farms often rely on sustainable practices and may work directly with buyers or cooperatives to bring their beans to market.

What You’ll Do

As a Manager, Business Intelligence, you will help develop and lead our newly established BI function - driving best practices, governance, and usability for enterprise-wide reporting. This is a critical role as we transition to a standardized and scalable BI solution. If you have experience standing up a BI function from scratch, a strong background in communication, data modeling, reporting, dashboard development, troubleshooting data issues, and a passion for turning data into actionable insights, we want to hear from you!

BI Platform Leadership & Development

  • Working with the business, develop and implement a comprehensive BI strategy to evolve from basic reporting into a sophisticated analytics framework, aligning with broader organizational objectives.
  • Collaborate and advocate for the business by harvesting analytics needs and empowering users with self-service reporting capabilities.
  • Lead the implementation and adoption of Looker as our core BI tool, including working with the implementation partner to add operational data to the data warehouse, adding new data elements and metrics in Looker, and building new reporting.
  • Design and deploy tailored reporting solutions and executive dashboards, to ensure consistency and accuracy of reports across the company.
  • Design, maintain, and evolve the reporting components, definitions, and governance for business reporting.
  • Develop and enforce standards for reporting to eliminate duplication and inconsistencies.

Reporting & Dashboards

  • Establish a self-service BI platform, enabling departments to independently access and analyze data, reducing dependency on IT for report generation.
  • Working with the business, develop, validate, and maintain standardized reports and dashboards for key business teams (Merchandising, Supply Chain, Operations, etc.).
  • Build reporting templates and enable business super users to build templates and frameworks that can be leveraged across different teams.
  • Ensure data accuracy, reliability, and consistency. Advocate for the integrity of the numbers and the systems/processes that exist to validate the numbers and data. Act as the administrator of the single version of the truth for the business.
  • Define role-based access controls to manage data visibility for business users.
  • Champion and promote the adoption of the platform across departments, ensuring it aligns with their data analysis needs.
  • Collaborate with partners and stakeholders to define reporting requirements, automate workflows, and enhance data visualization capabilities.

Business Partnering & Support

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand reporting needs and business processes.
  • Develop training materials for all BI tools, and train and support business users on self-service reporting best practices.
  • Work closely with IT, data engineers, and external consultants to optimize data pipelines and reporting performance.
  • Partner with senior leadership to provide strategic insights and data-driven recommendations.
  • Lead associates in a way that exemplifies the leadership principles taught in Rural King’s Thrive Leadership Program.
  • Use discretion and independent judgment in daily decisions while maintaining a high level of confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Actively participate in learning initiatives offered such as training programs, workshops, and webinars. Leverage these opportunities to acquire new knowledge, refine existing skills, and stay current on the latest developments.
  • Provide friendly, proactive, and professional internal and external support to others, assisting with inquiries, concerns, and issues promptly and effectively.
  • Demonstrate behaviors that exemplify Rural King’s Values: People First, Integrity, Attitude, Initiative, Teamwork, Accountability, and Continuous Improvement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
