These competencies are essential to drive financial performance, ensure compliance, and support organizational decision-making in a virtual environment.

How does a Remote CFO maintain effective communication and collaboration with executive teams and stakeholders?

As a Remote CFO, maintaining clear and consistent communication with executive teams and stakeholders is essential. This is typically achieved through scheduled virtual meetings, regular financial reporting via secure cloud-based platforms, and prompt responses to inquiries. Remote CFOs often leverage collaboration tools such as Slack, Zoom, and project management software to stay aligned with company objectives and ensure financial strategies are well-understood. Building trust and transparency in a virtual environment requires proactive updates, clear documentation, and the ability to present complex financial information in an accessible manner.

Job description

Fractional CFO - Turning Financial Data Into Confident Business Decisions (Remote)

Company: How To MANAGE a Small Law Firm (HTM)
Location: 100% Remote (Must reside in AZ, CO, FL, GA, IL, MD, MI, NC, NJ, NY, PA, TX, VA, or WA)
Department: Executive Leadership
Employment Type: Full-Time | W-2 Employee
Compensation: $110,000 Base Salary + Performance Compensation | $182,000+ On-Target Earnings

Please Read Before Applying

This role requires direct experience managing multiple client relationships simultaneously as a CFO, Fractional CFO, Outsourced CFO, Virtual CFO, Business Advisor, or in a multi-client financial leadership environment. Have you done this?

Yes - we'd love to hear from you. Please continue reading. No - this position is likely not the right fit.

This is a U.S.-based position. Applicants must currently reside in one of the listed states (AZ, CO, FL, GA, IL, MD, MI, NC, NJ, NY, PA, TX, VA, or WA) and be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship. We are unable to consider candidates residing outside the U.S.

This is a strategic CFO role, not a Controller or accounting management role. If your background is primarily in managing books, closing the monthly financials, or overseeing an accounting team - rather than advising owners on strategy and driving business decisions - this is likely not the right fit.

About the Role

At How To MANAGE a Small Law Firm (HTM), our CFOs help law firm owners understand their numbers, improve profitability, and make confident business decisions.

You'll operate much like a CFO does for any single client - analyzing financials, guiding strategy, and building trust - but within a structured portfolio model. As the financial partner to a portfolio of approximately 30 growing law firms, you'll help business owners transform financial data into actionable insights that improve cash flow, profitability, and long-term growth.

This is a full-time W-2 executive position - not a 1099 consulting opportunity or independent fractional practice.

HTM provides the clients, systems, and infrastructure so you can focus entirely on what you do best: helping business owners make better financial decisions.

No legal industry experience is required. We'll teach you everything you need to know about serving law firms.

Why This Beats Running Your Own Practice

If you've built (or thought about building) an independent fractional or outsourced CFO practice, you know the tradeoffs: the strategic work is rewarding, but finding clients, managing your own sales pipeline, and handling the business side of the business eats into the work you actually want to do.

At HTM, we remove that burden entirely:

  • No business development. We bring you a full portfolio of clients - you never have to sell, market, or chase your next engagement.
  • Predictable income + upside. A guaranteed base salary plus performance compensation, instead of the feast-or-famine cycle of independent consulting.
  • Full benefits, real structure. Medical/dental/vision (75% employer-paid), 401(k) match, unlimited PTO, and a built-in team - without sacrificing the autonomy and strategic ownership you're used to.
  • Scale, without the overhead. Work across roughly 30 clients with systems, support staff, and internal collaborators already in place - not spreadsheets and admin work you're doing solo at 9pm.
  • A fast-growing company behind you. HTM has been an Inc. 5000 Fastest-Growing Company every year since 2013, with a culture built on ownership, accountability, and results - not corporate bureaucracy.

If you're excited about strategic financial leadership but tired of also being your own sales team, back office, and biz-dev department - this role is built for exactly that shift.

About HTM

How To MANAGE a Small Law Firm is the nation's leading provider of Fractional C-Suite services for solo and small law firms.

Recognized as an Inc. 5000 Fastest-Growing Company every year since 2013, HTM partners with entrepreneurial law firm owners who have built successful practices but need experienced financial and operational leadership to scale their businesses.

Our clients don't need another accountant. They need a financial leader who helps them understand the business, make better decisions, and build a more profitable organization.

Who This Role Is For

You'll likely thrive here if you:

  • Enjoy helping entrepreneurs understand their numbers and make better business decisions
  • Love turning financial data into clear insights and action plans
  • Have partnered directly with founders or business owners to improve profitability
  • Enjoy advising leaders while also driving execution
  • Thrive in a fast-paced, multi-client environment where every business presents a different challenge
  • Want the stability and benefits of a full-time W-2 position while still enjoying the variety of advisory work
What You'll Do

This is hands-on financial leadership. You won't simply prepare reports or explain historical numbers - you'll help owners use financial information to make better decisions and improve business performance.

  • Serve as the financial leader for approximately 30 client businesses
  • Review financial statements and identify opportunities for improvement
  • Create financial forecasts, budgets, and cash flow strategies
  • Build KPI dashboards and financial reporting systems
  • Help owners understand profitability drivers and business performance
  • Identify financial risks and recommend solutions
  • Improve pricing, margins, cash flow, and operational profitability
  • Partner with owners on strategic growth decisions
  • Create accountability around financial goals and metrics
  • Help businesses become less reactive and more financially disciplined
  • Build trusted, long-term relationships with business owners
  • Collaborate with internal team members to deliver an exceptional client experience
QualificationsMust-Have
  • 10+ years of finance leadership experience
  • Direct experience managing multiple client relationships simultaneously as a CFO, Fractional CFO, Outsourced CFO, Virtual CFO, Business Advisor, or within a multi-client financial leadership environment
  • Direct experience advising or partnering with founders or business owners
  • Strong financial analysis, forecasting, and strategic planning skills
  • Experience translating financial data into business recommendations
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional leadership experience
Nice-to-Have
  • Experience supporting small-to-mid-sized businesses generating approximately $1M-$35M+ in annual revenue
  • Experience working with service-based businesses (e.g., law firms, agencies, consulting firms) and their unique financial models
  • CFO-level ownership of financial strategy and decision-making
  • Experience building financial reporting systems, dashboards, and forecasting processes
  • Experience helping businesses scale beyond founder dependence
  • High emotional intelligence and executive presence
  • Ability to coach business owners while holding them accountable to financial goals
  • Experience serving multiple organizations or operating as a Fractional CFO
This Role Is NOT a Fit If
  • You're looking for a consulting or contract opportunity
  • You prefer supporting one company instead of partnering with multiple business owners
  • You want to continue building your own CFO consulting or fractional practice
  • Your experience is limited primarily to accounting, bookkeeping, or financial reporting
  • You have served primarily as a Controller, Accounting Manager, or Bookkeeper rather than a CFO or strategic financial advisor
  • You have only managed finance inside a single company
  • You focus primarily on historical reporting rather than forward-looking strategy
  • You prefer maintaining existing processes rather than improving systems
  • You thrive only in highly structured corporate environments
Compensation & Benefits
  • $110,000 Base Salary
  • Performance Compensation with $182,000+ On-Target Earnings
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance (75% employer-paid)
  • Company-paid short- and long-term disability insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Company-wide paid shutdown during Thanksgiving week
  • One additional mandatory paid week off annually
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Pet insurance
  • Legal insurance
  • Professional and executive leadership development
  • 100% Remote work environment
