What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Augmented Reality Developer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Remote Augmented Reality Developer, you need a strong background in computer science, 3D graphics, and AR development, often demonstrated by a relevant degree or portfolio. Familiarity with AR platforms like ARKit, ARCore, Unity, Unreal Engine, and programming languages such as C# or C++ is crucial. Outstanding problem-solving, communication, and self-management skills help you collaborate effectively and deliver projects independently in a remote setting. These competencies enable the creation of immersive, high-quality AR experiences and ensure reliable performance when working remotely.

What are some common challenges faced when working remotely as an Augmented Reality developer, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Augmented Reality (AR) professionals often face challenges such as hardware compatibility issues, limited access to specialized equipment, and difficulties in real-time collaboration with designers and stakeholders. To address these, many teams use cloud-based AR development platforms and version control systems to streamline asset sharing and testing. Regular virtual meetings, clear documentation, and adopting collaborative tools like shared 3D workspaces can help maintain communication and ensure project alignment. Additionally, many companies provide stipends or loaner devices to ensure remote team members have access to necessary hardware.

What are remote augmented reality jobs?

Remote augmented reality jobs involve working with AR technology—software and hardware that overlays digital information onto the real world—while performing all job duties from a remote location. These roles can include AR developers, designers, project managers, testers, and support staff who collaborate virtually to create, test, and maintain AR applications. Remote AR professionals use tools like Unity, Unreal Engine, and ARKit/ARCore to build immersive experiences for mobile, web, or headset platforms. They often work for tech companies, startups, or agencies, supporting industries such as gaming, education, healthcare, and retail. Communication and project management are typically handled through online collaboration platforms, making strong digital communication skills essential.

About VIATechnik:

VIATechnik is the global leader in Virtual Design and Construction. We have over 400 digital experts around the globe. The firm's services include Virtual Design & Construction (VDC), Building Information Modeling (BIM), Virtual & Augmented Reality, Digital Twins, and Enterprise Software Application Development.

We work on some of the industry's largest and most interesting projects such as Apple's new headquarters, Virgin Hyperloop One, Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) modernization & expansions, Denver International Airport, Chicago O'Hare International Airport, Hudson Yards, the Atlanta Falcons Stadium, Chase Arena, the Tesla Gigafactory and many more. Our team is made up of leading VDC professionals, technologists, architects, and engineers who have a passion for solving problems and a thirst for learning. We are results-driven, creative solution finders and enjoy putting ourselves in our clients' shoes.

The role:

We are looking for a Senior VDC Manager who can lead enterprise-level projects for large general contractor clients. We need someone who is very comfortable with ambiguity and always looks for the win-win in negotiations and discussions. You will be a key member of this department's management team.

In this role you will:

  • Report to VIATechnik Directors and Studio Leads on VDC/BIM services.
  • Manage VDC/BIM projects including 3D BIM creation, clash detection, clash resolution, 4D simulations, 5D quantity and/or cost analysis, point cloud to BIM, virtual reality, augmented reality, and other VDC/BIM applications. Implement BIM for trades focusing on construction and fabrication including the creation of coordination documents and spool drawings, enabling BIM to factory and BIM to field, automated layout, etc.
  • Integrate BIM and Lean concepts to achieve optimized VDC processes, technical delivery, and client success on projects across architecture, structure, and MEP trades.
  • Serve as the main point of contact and account manager to one of our enterprise clients based on the West Coast. Serve as the primary interface and cultivate client relationships. Present work to clients. Conduct and/or actively participate in meetings with clients.
  • Create detailed schedules, project plans, and budget projections to effectively manage projects to successful completion. Proactively identify and communicate gaps in planning to clients and stakeholders.
  • Participate in interviewing, selecting, and reviewing employees within the department as needed.
  • Assist in providing estimates, take offs, and bids for potential work and change orders.
  • Identify opportunities for efficiency improvements, including actively supporting the creation of playbooks and standard operating procedures. Enhance VIATechnik's goal of continuous improvement within our company, for our clients, and for the industry.
  • Responsible for on-time completion, overall budget, quality, and client satisfaction on projects.
  • Align resources, plan work, coordinate, and manage a team of BIM specialists, other VIATechnik project team members, and third party vendors. Includes presenting project scope and instructions to the team, ensuring all questions are answered, team output is received on time, and that the team is producing high-quality work.
  • Learn and present new VDC technology applications for our team and clients.
  • Travel to client sites and other VIATechnik company locations.
  • Contribute to the VIATechnik culture of professional development and knowledge sharing by participating in and leading training efforts.
  • Serve as the people manager for VIATechnik employees from entry to manager levels as assigned. Includes supporting career development, feedback, training, and project execution success for all direct reports.

What's in it for you:

  • Purpose: this is an opportunity to lead VDC initiatives on some of the most ambitious construction projects in the world. You will shape the way our enterprise clients execute design, coordination, and construction by integrating next-generation digital tools and workflows.
  • Growth: you will gain exposure to complex, multi-trade environments, develop strategic client leadership skills, and contribute directly to the evolution of VIATechnik's national VDC practice. The role offers advancement into higher-level operational and strategic leadership positions.
  • Motivators: you will operate in an innovative, technology-forward culture that values autonomy, creativity, and measurable results. Every project you lead will have a visible impact on both client success and the advancement of digital construction practices across the industry.

Apply if you have:

  • A bachelor's and/or master's degree in architecture, civil engineering, construction management, or similar.
  • 5-8 years of project management experience for a general contractor.
  • 2-4 years of experience implementing BIM/VDC workflows on large, complex construction projects.
  • Strong technical understanding of project management processes, tools, systems, workflows, and schedules.
  • Deep understanding of project requirements and goals, as well as how to accomplish them
  • Proven ability to manage multiple simultaneous VDC projects, including scope, schedule, and budget, with minimal oversight.
  • Strong technical proficiency in reading and interpreting construction documents (drawings, specs, submittals, and contracts).
  • Demonstrated leadership in team coordination, resource planning, and project delivery across remote and cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a track record of building trust with clients and internal stakeholders.
  • A positive outlook and strong ability to steer difficult conversations to positive outcomes.
  • Availability for occasional travel to client sites.

Even better if you have:

  • A strong understanding of construction processes.
  • Experience overseeing BIM/VDC implementation across the full project lifecycle, from design development to fabrication and installation.
  • A track record of training others, developing SOPs, or contributing to internal process improvements.
  • Experience supporting proposals, estimating, and change order development for VDC-related scopes.
  • Experience working for small GCs where you've touched every aspect of projects.
  • Strong ability to mentor junior team members and support their career development.
  • A project management certification or degree.
  • Familiarity with Lean principles, Agile delivery, or integrated project delivery (IPD) methodologies.
